Bustling year-end vegetable hubs

ĐBP - With only a few days remaining until the 2026 Bính Ngọ Lunar New Year (Tết), farmers across the vegetable hubs of the province are rushing into their peak harvest season.

From early morning until late afternoon, residents are busy in the fields caring for, pruning, and transporting green vegetables to supply the Tết market, creating an urgent and lively atmosphere in these final days of the year. In the vegetable fields of Sam Mứn commune, the production air is increasingly frantic as the new year approaches, with people harvesting quickly along stretching green rows to meet the year-end demand.

Nearly three months ago, Nguyễn Văn Quân in Village 1, along with many other households in the commune, proactively sowed various vegetable crops for the holiday. Thanks to cultivation experience and favorable weather, the crops have thrived, particularly kohlrabi and cabbage, which are now ready for harvest with high yields. Nguyễn Văn Quân shared that his family manages more than 3,000 square meters of land for tomatoes, eggplants, chilies, and other vegetables. Having planted since the tenth lunar month, they have already sold a portion of their output, leaving the remaining kohlrabi and cabbage for the Tết market. He expressed hope that prices would rise in the coming days to provide his family with more income for the holiday preparations.

As Tết draws near, Sam Mứn farmers are even busier ensuring timely supplies. According to this year’s plan, the total vegetable area in the commune reached approximately 136.82 hectares. Residents regularly practice crop rotation and staggered planting to maintain a steady supply of various vegetables for the holiday market. Đỗ Đức Anh from the Sam Mứn commune General Service Center noted that while vegetable prices have started to decline compared to earlier periods, people remain active in the fields because this is their primary livelihood and requires continuous year-round effort.

Since the tenth lunar month, dozens of households in the Noong Luống General Agricultural Cooperative in Thanh Yên commune have simultaneously planted Tết vegetables across more than 10 hectares. Each household manages several thousand square meters, allowing for flexible intercropping of kohlrabi, cabbage, tomatoes, and carrots to reduce risks and improve efficiency. Proactive links between production and consumption have enabled the cooperative to sell most of its output by now. Although prices tend to drop near Tết, previous high-priced harvests have provided stable income. Specifically, chili production areas are under consumption contracts with suppliers, helping maintain stable prices and securing income for growers.

Nguyễn Xuân Huy, Chairman and Director of the cooperative, shared that despite the modest prices, people are still rushing to harvest, classify, and pack their produce to meet the market’s needs, hoping for extra income to ensure a more sufficient New Year for their families.

Following the harvest, residents immediately begin staggered planting to ensure they can meet on-going market demand.

Across the fields of Thanh Yên, Thanh Nưa, and Sam Mứn, the work rhythm remains intense as farmers head to the fields early to harvest, sort, and bag goods for transport to markets and consumption points. On fertile soil, firm cabbages, lush kohlrabi, ripe red tomatoes, and heavy chili plants line the rows in this critical time of the year. Everyone is taking advantage of every day to bring fresh produce to the market. Despite fluctuating prices and sometimes unstable outlets, the community maintains regular production to avoid leaving land fallow. The diligence and persistence of these farmers are ensuring an abundant supply of clean food for the people during the Tết holidays.
