Preserving, restoring, and promoting historical sites’ values

ĐBP - With strong support from the Government and local authorities, efforts to preserve and restore the Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Historical Site have been prioritized.

This historic site once witnessed a pivotal battle which resounded throughout the five continents and was world-shaking, is being carefully restored to enhance its educational value and attract more visitors to Điện Biên Province.

Construction units are building components of the project supporting the development of prominent tourist destinations at the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters in Mường Phăng.

The battlefield holds immense historical and cultural significance, not only as a symbol of national pride but also as a key driver of tourism in the province. To further preserve its legacy, Điện Biên province has launched several restoration projects. A recently initiated led by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, focuses on improving key areas, including landscape restoration, upgrades to pathways and lighting, and enhancements to visitor infrastructure. Specific projects include upgrading the route to General Võ Nguyên Giáp’s bunker, constructing a northern landscape area near the General’s memorial at the Điện Biên Campaign Headquarters in Mường Phăng, and refurbishing the central entrenched fortification site. Additionally, improvements in Phiêng Lơi Village (Thanh Minh Commune) and Che Căn Village (Mường Phăng Commune) aim to integrate historical sites with the cultural life of ethnic communities.

According to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, investment in developing key tourist destinations will help improve infrastructure and gradually connect historical sites with cultural villages in Điện Biên Phủ city. These efforts not only preserve historical heritage but also enhance the site’s appeal to visitors, contributing to local socio-economic growth.

Overall perspective of the second phase of the Him Lam Stronghold preservation and restoration project.

One of the major upcoming projects is the second phase of the preservation and restoration of the Him Lam Stronghold’s headquarters. Set to begin in late March 2025, the project has a total investment of over VNĐ 90 billion, sourced from central and local budgets as well as private sector contributions. Mr. Nguyễn Quốc Quân, Deputy Director of the provincial Civil and Industrial Project Management Board, which oversees the project, stated: “The Him Lam Stronghold, a key position within the Điện Biên Phủ entrenched fortification, was once considered the “steel gate” of the French Colonialists. To further honor and preserve this site, the second phase of the project will include a 45-meter-long relief depicting the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, a memorial house, a public square, parking facilities, and landscaped green spaces with flower gardens”.

The Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Historical Site currently consists of 45 key locations. Preserving and promoting these sites not only helps educate younger generations about history but also contributes to the province’s socio-economic development. In addition to restoration efforts, the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is also prioritizing environmental conservation at these landmarks. Measures include repairing and upgrading facilities, planting and maintaining greenery, and regularly maintaining supporting structures to create a clean, green, and well-maintained space for visitors.

Staff and employees of the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum tend to the flower gardens within the museum’s premises.

A standout attraction within the site is the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum, which plays a vital role in preserving historical artifacts while serving as a key highlight of the province’s tourism sector. According to its Director Vũ Thị Tuyết Nga, the museum is not only dedicated to protecting and showcasing historical relics but also to enhancing its visual appeal to attract more visitors. Efforts include adding ornamental plants, designing engaging outdoor spaces, and planting seasonal flowers to create a more immersive experience. In addition to historical exhibits, the museum also features designated “check-in” spots, allowing visitors to capture memorable moments during their visit.

With ongoing plans and projects, the preservation and restoration of the Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield Special National Historical Site are being systematically and methodically executed. This endeavor not only fulfills the responsibility of safeguarding a significant part of the nation’s history but also contributes to sustainable tourism development, positioning Điện Biên as an attractive cultural and historical destination. The Điện Biên Phủ Battlefield is set to become a pivotal site for historical education, attracting both domestic and international tourists, and playing a vital role in the province’s socio-economic development.
