Cloud Hunting at Tằng Quái Pass

ĐBP — Nestled amid the towering mountains, Tằng Quái Pass (located at the border between Ẳng Nưa and Ngối Cáy communes in Mường Ảng District) has become a popular destination for those captivated by the majesty of the Northwest landscape and passionate about cloud hunting. The billowing layers of clouds that blanket the Mường Khoe Valley create an intense attraction for young visitors.

Tằng Quái Pass has become a fresh new destination for young people to enjoy mountain cloud-watching and “cloud hunting.”

Located along National Highway 279, about 5 km from Mường Ảng District centre and a 45-minute drive from Điện Biên Phủ City, Tằng Quái Pass is a fresh destination for young adventurers passionate about cloud hunting. From high vantage points, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Mường Ảng Valley, surrounded by majestic natural scenery, immersing themselves in the rugged hills and a sea of white clouds. This spot provides an ideal escape for those looking to retreat from the hustle and bustle of life and find tranquility amid the mountains.

For first-time visitors to Tằng Quái Pass, the excitement and anticipation of cloud hunting are palpable. Trần Linh, from Điện Biên Phủ City, shared her feelings at the start of her journey: “I love seeing a sea of clouds, so many clouds. I want to go cloud hunting in the early morning when the sun rises.” Experiencing cloud hunting for the first time, Linh couldn't hide her joy, imagining the clouds drifting by and the sunrise emerging from the vast white sea.

Visitors to Tằng Quái this season are captivated by the majestic natural beauty of Điện Biên's landscape.

However, the journey to hunt clouds doesn’t always go smoothly. On the day Linh visited Tằng Quái Pass, the weather was unfavourable, with thick fog blocking the sunlight, which made her cloud-hunting experience less than perfect. “I feel a bit disappointed. I’ll probably come back here to try again another time,” Linh shared.

Trần Thị Thu Hải, the owner of Hải An Rest Stop—a popular spot for tourists to view and check in at Tằng Quái Pass—explained: “The best time for cloud hunting is from October to the end of January. Visitors should arrive at the rest stop by 6 a.m. to witness the entire sunrise emerging from the sea of clouds.”

On clear days, the sight of the sea of clouds merging with the sunrise on the horizon creates a majestic natural landscape.

For those who miss the chance to go cloud hunting, many are determined to return to experience it again. Like Linh, who plans to revisit Tằng Quái with the hope of a complete experience, witnessing the majestic and mystical natural landscape of Điện Biên.

The cloud-hunting experience at Tằng Quái Pass is more than just sightseeing; it’s a journey that connects visitors with nature. The beauty of the sea of clouds, mountains, forests, and the sunrise creates a sense of entering another world, where the soul feels light and at ease. Besides the stunning scenery, visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture of the Thái and Mông ethnic groups, enjoy Điện Biên specialities like sticky rice, hill chicken, and savour a cup of Mường Ảng coffee—a local speciality of the region.

Cloud hunting at Tằng Quái Pass is not merely a sightseeing trip; it’s a journey that connects visitors with nature.

Each visitor leaving Tằng Quái Pass carries unforgettable memories. This is not just a beautiful check-in spot but also a place that evokes a love for nature and a sense of pride in Điện Biên. Many won’t hesitate to return, eager to immerse themselves in the sea of white clouds, to feel the tranquility of the mountains, and to hold onto a bit of peace within.

Tằng Quái Pass not only offers visitors a chance to connect with nature but also helps them find serenity amid the layers of drifting clouds that blanket the valley. On clear days, the scene of clouds merging with the sunrise on the horizon creates a magical natural painting that captivates all the senses.

Visitors, from professional photographers to those simply wanting to capture a special moment, are all enchanted by the majestic landscape of Tằng Quái Pass and Điện Biên as a whole.
