Currently, the province is home to four religions: Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and the seventh-day Adventist church of Việt Nam. Although followers make up only about 12% of the provincial population, they play an important role in strengthening solidarity and joining ethnic communities in socio-economic development and building a modern cultural life.
Mùa A Vảng, Chairman of the provincial Fatherland Front Committee, said that for many years, religious communities have made great efforts in production and business, actively participating in patriotic movements and humanitarian activities, poverty reduction, and charity work. By following the motto “Good life, good faith”, they have made meaningful contributions to Điện Biên’s development.
Throughout the province’s stages of growth-from economic, cultural, and social development to maintaining security and ensuring social welfare-religious groups have made practical contributions. Each church and each believer shares the common goal of building a prosperous, happy life and a stable, developed society.

Since its establishment in 2016, the provincial Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Executive Committee has quickly affirmed its role in both Buddhist affairs and social activities. Venerable Thích Nhuận Thanh, Vice Chairman of the committee, shared: “The spirit of compassion and benevolence in Buddhism goes hand in hand with patriotism and social responsibility. We always encourage monks, nuns, and Buddhists to uphold national traditions, preserve cultural identity, live ethically, and seek peace and happiness.”
At the committee’s call, numerous social resources have been mobilized to bring practical benefits to the community. Each year, the Sangha distributes tens of thousands of gifts to disadvantaged children and students, and supports road construction and schools, with total contributions worth tens of billions of VND. Most recently, when natural disasters struck communes in the former Điện Biên Đông district, the Sangha provided aid and relief supplies to affected residents.
In connection with the Ban flower Festival, a signature cultural event of the province, the Sangha also organizes the Ban flower season Festival, which highlights Buddhist culture while meeting spiritual needs, promoting Điện Biên’s image, and boosting tourism.
Alongside Buddhism, the catholic community in Điện Biên actively embraces the motto “Good life, good faith”. Catholics are at the forefront of patriotic movements, with many households boldly applying science and technology, shifting crops and livestock to escape poverty and prosper. Their spirit of solidarity and mutual support has created civilized, safe, and close-knit communities. Father Trần Quý Tuần, parish priest of Điện Biên Parish, said: “Parishioners not only comply well with the Party and State’s policies but also strive in production, help each other escape poverty, abandon outdated customs, and build a new cultural life.”
Among ethnic minorities, especially the Hmông people, Protestantism has had a strong influence. In recent years, protestant denominations have operated in accordance with the law, closely cooperating with authorities and the community. Through religious gatherings, pastors and preachers not only share the Bible but also encourage believers to comply with laws, abandon outdated practices, and build new lifestyles. Protestant followers have actively joined in safeguarding national security, keeping villages peaceful, and many families have overcome hardship, helping to reduce poverty and stabilize society.
According to Mùa A Vảng, a key highlight of religious communities in recent years is their spirit of “Loving God, loving country” and “Good life, good faith”, demonstrating deep ties with the nation. Religious followers actively engage in poverty reduction, support the “For the poor” fund, and contribute to disaster and pandemic relief. Many religious collectives and individuals have been recognized and commended for their outstanding contributions.
“In every period of the revolution, religious solidarity has always been a vital part of national unity. In Điện Biên, that tradition has been strongly promoted, helping ensure success in the province’s socio-economic development as well as national defense and security”, emphasized Mùa A Vảng.
