The initiative has significantly contributed to social welfare efforts, the development of sustainable livelihood models, and support for border-area women in overcoming hardship and improving their economic conditions toward a happier life.
As part of the program, the Điện Biên provincial Women’s Union, in collaboration with the Hải Dương provincial Women’s Union, recently delivered essential and meaningful gifts to disadvantaged women in Sen Thượng border commune (Mường Nhé district). The donations, including computers, electric fans, televisions, and 10 calves for 10 women’s union member households, had a total value of nearly VND 600 million. These heartfelt contributions from Hải Dương’s women demonstrated solidarity and encouragement to help local women rise above difficulties and strive for better livelihoods.
Chu Phu Pớ, President of the Sen Thượng commune Women’s Union, shared: “Despite our efforts, life remains extremely challenging for women in Sen Thượng. Each year, local women’s union receives support from the provincial and district unions as well as the Sen Thượng Border Post. The thoughtful gifts from the Hải Dương provincial Women’s Union are a great motivation for our members to develop economically and contribute to safeguarding border landmarks.”

Between 2018 and 2024, the Nậm Pồ district Women’s Union received over VND 465 million in funding through the program. According to Trần Thị Yến, Vice President of the union, upon receiving the funds, the union coordinated with provincial leaders and four local communes of Si Pa Phìn, Phìn Hồ, Nậm Nhừ, and Chà Nưa to conduct community consultations, household surveys, and meetings to explain the purpose of the livelihood models and select suitable recipients in a transparent, fair manner.
Currently, seven livelihood models, such as livestock and poultry farming, fruit cultivation, are operating effectively. In addition to loans, since early 2024, the district Women’s Union has partnered with local organizations and border guard posts to donate meaningful gifts such as houses of compassion, free medical check-ups and medicines, and breeding cattle to border-area women.
Following directives from the Vietnam Women’s Union and the Vietnam Border Guard Command, the Điện Biên provincial Women’s Union and the provincial Border Guard Command jointly issued implementation plans for the program. To mobilize community support for impoverished border women, the provincial union instructed grassroots unions to align program implementation with local conditions and raise awareness among members and the public about the program’s goals. It also worked with local authorities to mobilize funding from State projects, social organizations, businesses, and individuals, encouraging union members across the province to support disadvantaged women in border areas through livelihood assistance and start-up capital.
In 2024, provincial women’s unions and other units designated to assist border communes mobilized resources to carry out activities such as providing houses of compassion, livelihood support, scholarships, medical check-ups, and gifts for poor women, worth over VND 1.8 billion in total. From early 2025 to date, the provincial union has partnered with the Hải Dương and Hưng Yên provincial Women’s Unions and other donors to provide nearly VND 800 million in scholarships, livelihood models, and housing support.
In addition, the provincial Women’s Union and the provincial Border Guard Command have directed local unions and border posts to intensify public awareness campaigns, providing women and children in border areas with vital knowledge. They have also encouraged women to strengthen civilian-military ties and actively join the movement “All people participate in protecting the national border sovereignty and security in the current context,” including combatting illegal border crossings and crime.
Through its practical activities, the “Supporting women in border areas” program has significantly improved the physical and mental wellbeing of women and communities in border regions, contributing to stronger, safer border areas and the firm protection of national territorial sovereignty and security.
