Ensuring food safety for public health

ĐBP - Food safety has always been a top priority, especially in the context of unsafe and untraceable food still infiltrating the market. In order to enhance the management and oversight of food safety, particularly in collective kitchens and school canteens, the Điện Biên province’s Bureau of Food Safety and Hygiene (BFSH) has been closely collaborating with relevant units to implement a variety of inspection, awareness-raising, and comprehensive monitoring measures.

At the end of March 2025, the BFSH’s specialized inspection team conducted a field inspection at Thanh Trường Kindergarten (Điện Biên Phủ city). This activity is part of the regular inspection plan to ensure compliance with the Food Safety Law and related decrees and circulars concerning food preparation and provision for children in educational institutions. The inspection focused on various aspects such as: food safety commitment forms, health certificates, food safety training, facilities, equipment, personnel, food source and raw materials. The inspection team took samples to test food safety standards as required. The results confirmed that the canteen at Thanh Trường Kindergarten met all necessary conditions.

An official of the BFSH test kitchen utensils at Thanh Trường Kindergarten for food safety.

Kiều Thanh Huyền, Principal of Thanh Trường Kindergarten, shared: “The results of the inspection are proof of the school’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of children’s meals. Every meal is not just a necessity but also an important factor contributing to children’s physical and intellectual development. Therefore, we always prioritize food safety in the management and organization of meals at school.”

To meet food safety standards, Pú Hồng Boarding Secondary School (Điện Biên Đông district) has contracted food suppliers with clear sources, ensuring strict procedures for food sourcing and a three-step inspection. The school menu is scientifically designed, rich in variety, and ensures a balanced nutritional intake, which is transparently displayed on an information board. Students are provided meals at proper times, in sufficient quantities, and with absolute hygiene standards. The kitchen staff undergoes regular health checks and participates in food safety training. Particularly for fresh food items such as meat and fish, the school selects reputable suppliers under the supervision of local authorities and parents.

Đỗ Hồng Dương, Principal of Pú Hồng Boarding Secondary School, stated: “Recognizing the paramount importance of food safety in the canteen, we have emphasized hygiene and food safety in every meal. We also collaborate with the local authorities to establish a monitoring board and parents’ representatives to oversee food purchases, ensuring quality and price standards. Implementing these comprehensive measures has greatly enhanced the quality of care and ensured the safety of meals for our boarding students.”

Food safety inspections at facilities ensure objectivity and transparency.

Not only at the grassroots level, but food safety inspections and monitoring are also conducted across the province, at the district and commune levels. In the first quarter of 2025, a total of 141 food safety inspection teams were formed, including 1 provincial team, 11 district teams, and 129 commune teams. During the peak period of the Lunar New Year and spring festivals in 2025, 1,642 facilities were inspected, with 100% of them meeting food safety requirements. Among facilities managed by the health sector, 346 were inspected in the first quarter, with 336 meeting standards (97.1%). Facilities failing inspections were mainly given warnings, educational guidance, and corrective instructions.

Hoàng Xuân Chiến, Head of the BFSH, noted: “Our goal is not only to detect violations but, more importantly, to help facilities raise awareness and comply with food safety regulations. In addition to inspections, we also intensify communication activities to raise public awareness of food safety. In the first quarter of 2025, the province organized 222 direct food safety awareness sessions with nearly 4,800 participants, broadcasted 220 times on the community loudspeaker system, hung 40 banners, and published 11 feature articles in the media. These activities not only enhance the public's awareness but also foster a social monitoring environment for food safety efforts at the local level.”

Authorities conduct food safety inspections to protect public health.

With a well-structured inspection and monitoring system, combined with the coordinated efforts of various sectors, food safety in Điện Biên is steadily improving, contributing significantly to protecting public health, particularly for children - the future generation of the nation. This also affirms the determination of authorities in creating a safe and healthy living and learning environment for all citizens.
