Where iconic blossoms stop travelers during their stay in Điện Biên

ĐBP - Flower-based tourism is emerging as an increasingly popular trend among nature lovers and photography enthusiasts, especially young travelers. In Điện Biên province, from iconic blossoms tied to festivals such as ban (Bauhinia) flowers and cherry blossoms to newly developed flower gardens for tourism, vibrant floral landscapes are helping create highly attractive travel experiences.

Every March, visitor numbers to Điện Biên surge, driven not only by the appeal of the Ban Flower Festival but also by the pristine white beauty of these blossoms. Many tourists say that just one visit during the blooming season is enough to give them a reason to return to this northwestern land, where ban flowers blanket roadsides and hillsides alike.

March marks the peak blooming season of ban flowers in Điện Biên.

An Diệu Hương, a visitor from Hà Nội, shared: “I used to know Điện Biên mainly through its history, but visiting during the Ban flower season feels completely different. The scenery is both poetic and majestic. I’ve taken so many beautiful photos and will definitely come back for other flower seasons.”

Alongside natural flowering seasons, local residents have shown creativity and flexibility in tapping into this trend by developing flower growing models for tourism. Well-invested flower gardens, combined with scenic setups and additional services, have quickly become popular check-in spots attracting large numbers of visitors.

The cosmos flower garden of Chớ A Dùa’s family in Village 36, Na Sang commune is conveniently located along National Highway 12.

In Village 36, Na Sang commune, a cosmos flower garden spanning thousands of square meters bloomed brilliantly during the recent Lunar New Year, becoming a “hot” destination for nature lovers and photographers. Located right next to National Highway 12, the site welcomes hundreds of visitors each day, including many from neighboring provinces.

According to Chớ A Dùa, owner of the cosmos garden, the vibrant pink fields are the result of careful preparation. “From late November 2025, we started preparing the soil and sowing seeds. The flowers reached peak bloom in late January 2026 and lasted for about two weeks,” he said.

“With an entrance fee of VND 20,000 per person, this model has brought my family a significant income compared to traditional farming,” Dùa added.

Beyond short term flower gardens, peach and plum blossom seasons also add to Điện Biên’s appeal. Not only do these models generate economic benefits, but they also help promote the local image and create additional livelihoods for highland communities.

About 15km from the center of Điện Biên Phủ ward, a plum garden of around 30 trees owned by Lò Thị Thiên in bản Nậm Ngám A, Pu Nhi commune, has become a familiar destination for visitors. The blossoms typically peak in early spring and last for one to two weeks, prompting tourists to arrive early to capture the best moments.

“We don’t just welcome visitors during the flowering season. After that, tourists can return in early May to pick fruit and buy it to take home,” Thiên said.

At the same time as plum blossoms bloom, peach gardens in Phù Lồng B village, Pu Nhi commune also burst into color, adding more highlights to visitors’ seasonal flower journeys.

A cherry blossom garden in Mường Phăng commune is a popular destination for families in the early months of the year.

These peach gardens were originally planted for fruit, but as more tourists came for photos, local households began opening their gardens to visitors, charging VND 20,000 per entry. They also offer costume and accessory rentals on-site, enhancing the experience for those coming to admire the blossoms and take photos.

Nguyễn Hồng Vân, a resident of Điện Biên Phủ ward and a nature enthusiast, has visited most of the province’s seasonal flower destinations. “These places are close to nature and easy to access, making them perfect for weekend relaxation and capturing memorable moments,” she said.

The vibrant colors of seasonal flowers are helping attract more visitors and diversify Điện Biên’s tourism offerings. With proper and coordinated investment, flower-based tourism could move beyond its seasonal nature to become a defining highlight, extending visitors’ stays and increasing tourism spending.
