The province’s greatest asset is its network of historical sites linked to the Điện Biên Phủ victory. Rather than limiting access to daytime hours, authorities have invested in artistic lighting systems at several sites within the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield relic complex, allowing visitors to explore by night. Since January 1, 2025, A1 hill relic site has officially opened to the public on weekend evenings and major holidays.
Night tours of A1 hill, enhanced by modern lighting and immersive narration, offer visitors a deeper sense of history in a solemn, tranquil setting. The initiative extends visiting hours, creates more opportunities for research and learning, and adds value to the province’s historical tourism offerings.
To better serve growing demand for cultural experiences, the Điện Biên Phủ victory museum began opening every Saturday evening (7:30P.M. to 9:30P.M.) and on major holidays in early 2025. Detailed staffing and equipment plans have been put in place to ensure smooth operations, with a focus on showcasing exhibition halls and the panoramic painting of the Điện Biên Phủ campaign. The museum also coordinates with local security forces to maintain public order.
In Tủa Chùa commune, the night market has emerged over the past three years as a new highlight in tapping tourism potential. More than a place for trade, the Tủa Chùa night market has been upgraded to host cultural and culinary performances aimed at preserving and promoting ethnic traditions. Every Saturday night, the highland market comes alive with traditional music and folk dances performed by local residents and schools. Ethnic cuisine stalls and specialty farm products blend into a vibrant cultural showcase rich in Tủa Chùa’s identity.
Notably, many vendors now combine in-person sales with livestreams on social media, bridging traditional market space with modern commerce. The night market thus creates new livelihood opportunities while encouraging visitors to stay longer and spend more.
More recently, the Mường Thanh market and commercial services project, linked to the Mường Thanh pedestrian street in Điện Biên Phủ ward, has reshaped the province’s central night-time economy. The area quickly draws crowds for weekend performances, food experiences and shopping. Music shows, light events and especially tech-driven countdown celebrations have given local tourism a youthful, dynamic image.
As Điện Biên pursues a green, smart and sustainable development strategy, it faces the imperative of shifting tourism growth from quantity to quality. Night-time tourism presents a key opportunity to achieve that goal. In addition to cultural performances and community-based experiences, local tourism promoters have launched the “Điện Biên Phủ by night” tour, offering themed heritage visits and culinary spaces rooted in local identity.
A resolution of the Điện Biên provincial Party Committee for 2026-2030, with a vision to 2035, identifies tourism as a strategic spearhead sector, developed along green, smart and sustainable lines while preserving heritage and protecting the environment. By 2030, the province aims to welcome 2.65 million visitors, including 600,000 international arrivals, generate more than VND 5 trillion in revenue, contribute 11 % of GRDP and create nearly 20,000 jobs.
Within that framework, the province has outlined clear measures to develop night-time tourism, including completing a tourism and culinary street in Điện Biên Phủ ward and operating pedestrian streets and night markets combined with multifunctional entertainment zones in Điện Biên Phủ ward and Tủa Chùa commune.
Developing night-time tourism is an inevitable step in restructuring the sector toward higher quality, efficiency and sustainability. Integrated into the province’s broader socio-economic planning, effective use of after-dark tourism can serve as both a growth engine and a vehicle for promoting the history, culture and people of Điện Biên.
The challenge is to ensure unified leadership, effective management and responsible exploitation of potential while safeguarding cultural identity and the ecological environment. With strong political commitment and a coordinated approach, Điện Biên has reason to believe that once fully unlocked, night-time tourism will extend visitor journeys and help cement tourism as a true economic spearhead in the province’s next phase of development.
