Far beyond a simple display of ethnic culture, the festival serves as a prime opportunity to promote the image, potential, and tourism strengths of Điện Biên to both domestic and international visitors. The 2026 festival, which took place from March 6 to March 12, featured a rich and attractive array of cultural, sporting, and tourism activities that drew massive participation from the very first days. The continuous cycle of art programs, traditional cultural experiences, and folk games created a joyful and bustling atmosphere that resonated throughout the province.
One of the major draws of the festival is the direct participation of tourists in the unique cultural activities of the ethnic communities. At the squares and various festival spaces, folk games such as making bánh giầy (sticky rice cake) and corn grinding took place enthusiastically, inviting visitors to roll up their sleeves and join the locals. Nguyễn Thu Hiền, a traveler from Hà Nội, shared that although she has visited Điện Biên many times, this was her first time arriving during the peak of the blossoms. She noted that the sight of white bauhinia flowers blooming everywhere across the streets, parks, and historical sites was incredibly beautiful, and participating in the festival activities made her trip significantly more memorable.
The festival framework extended beyond community culture to include meticulously staged art programs, such as festivals of folk songs and dances, traditional costume shows, and the immersive “Huyền tích U Va” performance. These acts vividly recreated the cultural life, customs, and legends associated with the land of Điện Biên. Simultaneously, the competitive spirit was on full display through the open 2026 Road Cycling Race and the “Returning Điện Biên Phủ” Marathon. These courses, winding through the city streets, local villages, and rugged mountains, did more than just challenge the athletes; they effectively showcased the stunning natural landscape of the region to a wider audience.
In terms of direct promotion, the province organized high-impact events like the Street Carnaval, the OCOP trade fair, and cultural exhibition spaces. A specific “Press Trip” was also arranged for media agencies and travel companies to survey and introduce the unique tourism destinations of Điện Biên. This strategic move aims to build professional connections and develop new travel products. Many visitors were also moved by the historical re-enactments, such as pushing pack bikes and cooking with Hoàng Cầm stoves. Trần Tất Thành, a tourist from Phú Thọ province, remarked that these hands-on experiences helped him deeply appreciate the fighting spirit and the daily struggles of his ancestors during the resistance period.
“Through the activities of the festival, the province wishes to introduce the natural beauty, deep history, and unique cultural values of Điện Biên to the world. This is also an opportunity for tourism businesses to connect and build new products to attract more visitors,” Nguyễn Thị Thanh Chuyên, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
The Bauhinia Flower Festivalis a cornerstone of the province’s strategy to enhance its tourism brand identity, stimulate demand, and promote the consumption of local products. By integrating artistic performances with trade promotion and OCOP showcases, the festival acts as a catalyst for shifting the economic structure toward services and tourism. It also opens doors for international cooperation and investment between Điện Biên and various domestic and global organizations. Moving forward, the province plans to continue professionalizing the festival, ensuring it remains the highlight of the Northwest and a permanent fixture on the tourism map of Việt Nam.
