Điện Biên bets on culture and history to drive tourism

ĐBP - In 2025, Điện Biên province welcomed more than 1.45 million visitors.

Festivals and cultural events have been organized in an increasingly professional and systematic manner, closely linked with the effective promotion of the province’s historical heritage system. Step by step, cultural and historical tourism has been established as a flagship product, laying a solid foundation for Điện Biên tourism to make a strong breakthrough in 2026 and the years ahead.

Well-structured and professionally organized festivals and cultural events, tied to the promotion of cultural and historical values, have helped extend visitors’ length of stay and boost tourist spending. Total tourism revenue reached about VND 2.4 trillion, the average length of stay approached three days, and international arrivals stood at 14,000, up 13.39 percent compared with 2024. These positive figures reflect Điện Biên’s growing appeal, with festival tourism emerging as a key driver.

A highlight of Điện Biên’s festival tourism landscape in 2025 was the Ban Flower Festival and the Cultural, Sports and Tourism Festival of Ethnic Groups in Điện Biên province. Featuring a wide range of vibrant cultural, artistic and sporting activities, the events attracted tens of thousands of visitors from both Vietnam and abroad. The festival space became a lively meeting point between tradition and modernity, and between local communities and visitors, helping to promote the image of Điện Biên as a destination rich in identity, friendly and welcoming.

Each festival carries its own distinctive character, reflecting the depth of history, beliefs and customs of ethnic communities, while offering visitors vivid and authentic opportunities to explore and experience local cultural values.

In particular, the Northwest Quintessence Festival - Điện Biên 2025 and the Three-Nation Còn Throwing Festival of Vietnam - Lao - China have become major highlights in regional tourism cooperation and cross-border collaboration. Through cultural exchanges and distinctive performances, the events not only showcase solidarity, cultural identity and development aspirations of ethnic communities in the Northwest, but also reinforce Điện Biên’s image as a safe, friendly and attractive destination.

Building on its rich cultural and historical heritage and striking natural landscapes, Điện Biên is stepping up efforts to attract investment in large scale, high impact tourism projects. Key projects such as the Điện Biên Phủ urban – service - cable car complex, the Pá Khoang lake urban and tourism complex, the Tà Lèng mountain resort, and the Huổi Phạ lake tourism area are expected to deliver breakthroughs in infrastructure, tourism products and destination space. The province is also prioritizing community-based tourism linked with the preservation of traditional cultures of ethnic minorities. Community tourism villages such as Phiêng Lơi cultural tourism village and Nà Sự community tourism village are helping local people generate additional livelihoods while directly participating in safeguarding and promoting their cultural heritage.

With a rich cultural heritage treasure that includes dozens of nationally recognized intangible cultural heritages and a system of ranked historical sites, most notably the Special National Historical Site of the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield, Điện Biên province currently has 22 national intangible cultural heritages and 35 historical sites classified at various levels. Alongside these heritage assets is a dedicated community of artisans. Across the province, 41 individuals have been awarded the title of Meritorious Artisan, and they continue to play a vital role in preserving, transmitting and promoting traditional cultural practices.

Nguyễn Minh Phú, member of the provincial Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Điện Biên province, said that building on historical values and cultural identity, the province will continue to organize festivals and cultural events with richer and more professional content, closely linked to the development of experiential tours and routes at historical sites, traditional craft villages and community tourism villages. At the same time, the province will effectively implement the project on preserving and promoting the cultural values of ethnic minorities in association with socio-economic development, turning historical and cultural heritage into an important resource for sustainable tourism growth.

In line with the Resolution of the 15th provincial Party Congress, Điện Biên has identified the development of tourism into a leading economic sector as one of its three strategic breakthroughs. The province is therefore focusing on the effective use of historical and cultural assets, diversifying tourism products such as ecotourism, community-based tourism, resort tourism and sports tourism, and strengthening the promotion of Điện Biên’s image on digital platforms and through regional cooperation.

With the concerted efforts of the entire political system and the active participation of businesses and local communities, Điện Biên’s tourism sector is steadily turning its aspiration for breakthrough growth into reality, built on the foundation of cultural and historical identity. By 2030, Điện Biên aims to become an attractive destination in the Northwest, where visitors not only sightsee and relax, but also gain a deep appreciation of heroic history, natural beauty and the distinctive cultural identity of its ethnic communities.
