Awakening tourism potential of Sam Mứn

ĐBP - Located in the western border area of Điện Biên province, Sam Mứn commune has great potential for developing eco-tourism, community-based tourism, and experiential tourism.

The attraction of this land comes from the unique cultural intersection space of the three ethnic groups of Thái, Mông, and Kinh, along with many local traditional customs, festivals, and characteristic cuisine.

The pristine beauty, fresh climate, and pure indigenous life have made Sam Mứn a coordinate converging all the advantages of the experiential tourism trend. Peaceful villages on the mountain slopes, ancient ban flower forests blooming white across the border sky, and the Tây Trang International Border Gate... all combine to create a unique complex of resources, opening up an exclusive direction for the locality.

The natural highlight attracting tourists recently in Sam Mứn is the Nậm Hẹ stream. The clear blue stream water, pristine natural landscape, and cool air year-round create an attraction for visitors. The area along the stream has many suitable spaces for organizing experiential, resort, and nature exploration activities.

The natural beauty and peaceful space of Nậm Hẹ stream leave many impressions on tourists, especially youths. Mai Hải Yến from Mường Thanh ward shared: “What impresses me most about Nậm Hẹ is the very peaceful feeling. The stream water is crystal clear, the air is cool and fresh, and the scenery still retains its pristine features. Just sitting by the stream, listening to the flowing water is enough to feel relieved after busy days.”

If Nậm Hẹ carries the gentle beauty of pristine mountains and forests, the Tây Trang International Border Gate area puts on a vibrant coat every time ban flowers bloom. The ban flower ridges stretching across the border mountain slopes seem to awaken the entire Northwest space after a cold winter. The color of ban flowers right at the border gate area has a very distinct beauty: slightly pink petals under the sun, both soft and outstanding amidst the vast green of the forest.

Every March, the road up to the Tây Trang International Border Gate attracts a large number of tourists, photographers, and exploration lovers. On the personal page “Blog của Rọt”, travel blogger Bùi Ngọc Công once shared: “This year, ban flowers bloomed a bit early and not as thickly as in previous years, but the Tây Trang Border Gate alone is ‘wow’ enough. And the ban flowers here look quite strange to me, not purely white like in other areas, but with a light pink tint, looking very radiant, yet still carrying the soul of the Northwest... Tây Trang is a destination worth experiencing, combined with visiting Landmark 113 between Việt Nam and Lào.”

In the tourism development strategies of many localities today, the factor creating depth and sustainable identity is community culture. This is also a prominent advantage of Sam Mứn. Traditional stilt houses, the Thái xòe dance, the sound of the Mông khèn, traditional crafts, living customs, and daily working life... are all valuable resources for developing experiential tourism.

For potential to become a driving force for development, Phạm Thiết Chùy, Chairman of the Sam Mứn commune People’s Committee, stated: “Recently, the commune has focused on implementing many activities to exploit tourism potential such as: propagating to raise people’s awareness, initially building experiential spots, maintaining environmental hygiene, and preserving traditional cultural values. However, tourism development still faces many difficulties, especially regarding transport infrastructure and facilities serving tourism. In addition, limited investment resources, ineffective promotional work, and the quality of local tourism human resources... are issues the locality needs to improve soon.”

Despite possessing many advantages, Sam Mứn tourism has not yet been exploited commensurately. Most destinations have not been synchronously invested in infrastructure and services; tourism products are still solitary, lacking chain connections among cultural experiences, cuisine, accommodation, and exploration. Promotional activities and building destination images have not yet created a strong ripple effect on digital platforms.

As experiential tourism and sustainable development trends receive increasing attention, Sam Mứn has many opportunities to exploit its available advantages. The locality directs tourism development associated with preserving ethnic cultural identities, focusing on building community-based tourism products, experiencing cultural life, agricultural production, and exploring natural landscapes.

To effectively exploit tourism potential, Sam Mứn commune has identified several key solutions such as: raising community awareness, training tourism skills for locals, preserving traditional cultural values, and protecting the ecological environment. The locality is focusing on promoting investment attraction in tourism infrastructure and services, gradually building characteristic products tied to cultural identity and border region advantages.

In the long term, Sam Mứn aims to build a destination image associated with natural landscapes, cultural identity, and community friendliness. Tourists coming to Sam Mứn will experience a characteristic ecological space and concurrently have the opportunity to learn about the lives, customs, and traditional cultural values of local ethnic groups.

Converging the indigenous values of nature and culture along with the determination of the local party committee, authorities, and people, Sam Mứn is opening its doors to sustainable tourism development. Although this journey faces many difficulties ahead, it opens up expectations for a strongly transforming border land. Every season when ban flowers bloom fully, the natural scenery along with unique traditional cultural values will add strong attraction to Sam Mứn tourism, a land bursting with vitality at the Fatherland’s border.
