Markets have always served as cultural and economic hubs in every region.

In Điện Biên Phủ City, Mường Thanh Market has become an indispensable part of local life. As such, building a new market is not just a desire but a necessary step to keep pace with the city’s development trends.

Nguyễn Thị Ngần, a trader at Mường Thanh Market, said: I’ve been with Mường Thanh Market since its early days. Now, with the new market being rebuilt, it’s not only more beautiful and modern but also offers greater business opportunities.” She added: “We traders are eagerly looking forward to a well-invested, upgraded market that will attract more customers, especially tourists.”

The project spans over 18,000 square metres, funded by the NQT Quảng Ninh Trading and Construction Joint Stock Company. It includes Mường Thanh Market, which covers 2,689 square metres, along with support facilities and a management office occupying 245 square metres. Additionally, three-storey kiosk blocks cover 2,990 square metres, while market-surrounding kiosks in 3.5-storey structures have a combined area exceeding 2,700 square metres. Various service areas are also included to enhance functionality and accessibility.

Kiosks within the market are gradually taking shape.

Designed with various modern features, the project integrates a traditional market with commercial services and public amenities such as squares and green spaces. It addresses the needs of residents while creating an entirely new living and working environment. Beyond business facilitation, the project aspires to foster a cohesive community.

Lê Thị Hương, a resident of Mường Thanh Ward, said: “I am very impressed by the scale and vision of the project. With its comprehensive infrastructure, particularly green spaces and public amenities, I believe this area will become an ideal place to live. This is something Điện Biên residents have long anticipated.”

Điện Biên Phủ City, a land marked by heroic historical imprints, is undergoing a vigorous transformation amidst the wave of modernisation. The Mường Thanh market and trade-service project, a large-scale initiative in Mường Thanh Ward, has become a symbol of this renewal. It is more than just an urban infrastructure project; it opens up vast economic, social, and cultural opportunities, promising to reshape this historic area.

According to Trần Văn Sơn, vice chairman of the People’s Committee of Mường Thanh Ward, once completed, the project will meet demands for housing, commercial services, and green landscapes while also serving as an architectural highlight for the area.

“It will form a multifunctional zone catering to the needs of work and living for residents, attracting new inhabitants, and fostering a favourable environment for cultural exchange, adding unique characteristics to the area,” he said.

The architectural landscape along major streets and public spaces is also designed to harmoniously connect with historical relics. Furthermore, the project represents a long-term vision for sustainable development. Its integrated technical infrastructure, including transport and drainage systems, greenery, and wastewater treatment facilities, aims to create a green, clean, and safe living environment.

The project has completed part of its technical infrastructure, with the market pavilion and kiosks slated for handover in the first quarter of 2025.

Beyond its economic importance, the Mường Thanh market and trade-service project has been designed as a space where people can live, work, and enjoy their surroundings. Incorporating features such as squares, fountains, and green landscaping, it offers a functional yet environmentally friendly living environment.
“Our aim is to create a space that seamlessly blends commerce with modern culture. This project not only optimises land-use value but also generates significant opportunities for traders and investors,” said Nguyễn Quốc Ngũ, chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of NQT Quảng Ninh Trading and Construction Joint Stock Company, the project’s investor. He added, “Moreover, we want this to be more than just a commercial hub—it will be a space for cultural connection and community interaction. This is an opportunity for sustainable development, meeting business needs while improving the quality of life for residents.”
The project’s combination of a modern market area, thoughtfully arranged kiosks, and service zones creates a harmonious space that is both vibrant and eco-friendly. A distinctive aspect of the development is its integration of modern and traditional elements, preserving the region’s inherent values while creating a unified and contemporary environment.
“We’re not just constructing a modern structure but striving to retain the intrinsic values of this land. Green spaces, squares, and public facilities are all carefully arranged to harmonise with the historical environment and surrounding landscape,” Ngũ said.

Overall perspective view of the Mường Thanh market and trade-service project.

The project is being executed in phases. The first phase has already completed a portion of the technical infrastructure, including the market pavilion and kiosks, which are scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2025. At present, the investor is mobilising equipment and personnel to expedite progress, with the goal of completing the entire project by 2025.

Through the combined efforts of the investor, local authorities, and residents, the project is set to become not only an iconic structure but also a catalyst for service and trade development. It aims to establish a liveable and vibrant space for the people in the historic land of Điện Biên Phủ.
