When ban (bauhinia) flowers “summon” season of honey

ĐBP - Every March, as the mountain slopes of Điện Biên brighten with the pristine white of ban (bauhinia) flowers, borderlands enter their sweetest season.

These wild blossoms awaken from a long winter sleep without any human hand to sow or tend them, opening up to beckon swarms of bees to a natural feast. Visitors to the highlands during this time are treated to a landscape of pure white petals, tinged with pink, silently illuminating the craggy mountainsides while their delicate, ethereal fragrance draws bees from all directions to begin the honey season.

Bauhinia flowers bloom silently across mountain slopes and deep valleys.

During these days, Đỗ Xuân Đoàn and the members of the Điện Biên Honey Bee Cooperative travel between their bee camps situated throughout the forests of Núa Ngam and Mường Nhà. To obtain the most authentic and pure honey, beekeepers begin their “honey-seeking marches” as early as January, allowing the colonies to stabilize and strengthen before the peak flow.

The cooperative manages approximately 2,000 colonies, which are never kept in a single location but are instead divided into small camps of a few hundred hives placed in the cleanest primary forests. This strategy ensures an environment free from agricultural chemicals, where the abundant wild blossoms allow the bees to produce the most pristine honey possible.

In the border area of Núa Ngam commune, a bee camp managed by the Điện Biên Honey Bee Cooperative has been established.

Drawing from years of experience, Đỗ Xuân Đoàn notes that while the general forest honey season spans from February to June, the specific bauhinia flower honey is concentrated primarily from February through the end of March. The quality of this honey is distinguished by its crystallization from forest blossoms, with bauhinia flower serving as the main source. The extraction process is remarkably strict, involving filtration through thick cloth to remove all impurities and young larvae, which prevents the honey from becoming sour and maintains its vibrant color and standard thickness. These dense, golden drops are then stored in sealed glass bottles or clean containers to preserve their distinct aroma.

These flowers naturally draw in diligent bees.

The value of this honey extends beyond its sweetness, as the cooperative has received high praise from the Center for Tropical Bees and Beekeeping Research, leading to its recognition as a 3-star OCOP product. With its high nutritional content, it is considered a precious natural medicine that supports respiratory health and boosts immunity. Consequently, although the annual output is not vast compared to industrial honey, it remains a preferred choice for visitors as both a personal staple and a prestigious gift.

During the production season, the camps are moved in close proximity to bauhinia forests.

Much like the fame of mint honey in Hà Giang, bauhinia flower honey has become a signature specialty of the Điện Biên mountains. The establishment of the cooperative in 2019 marked a turning point, transforming beekeeping from a spontaneous side job into a professional industry with an annual output reaching up to 100 tons. The cooperative has since expanded its product line to include traditional bottled honey and comb honey, while successfully piloting a 100% European-standard “super honey” technique that isolates pure honey from the brood areas.

Ultimately, the cooperative’s bauhinia flower honey products have successfully attained a 3-star OCOP certification.

Today, Điện Biên bauhinia flower honey is available in major supermarkets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with cooperative members seeing their incomes double or triple. This success reflects a shifting mindset toward green and sustainable agriculture. Looking ahead, the cooperative aims to upgrade its OCOP status and expand into the European market by applying “Beekeeping 4.0” technologies. As March returns to the majestic land of Điện Biên, these diligent “warriors” continue their journey from branch to branch, gathering the essence of the earth and sky to add another golden season to the Northwest.
