Protecting livestock against disease risks

ĐBP - Seasonal transitions, characterized by hot sun alternating with heavy rain, create favorable conditions for pathogens to emerge in livestock. Therefore, localities and units across the province are boosting vaccination efforts for livestock and poultry. This generates active immunity, protects herds, minimizes damage to farmers, and contributes to developing livestock breeding safely and sustainably.

During these days, veterinary cadres from the Pú Nhung commune General Services Center arrive early in villages to administer vaccines to livestock. At each household, veterinary forces directly inject vaccines while guiding residents on post-vaccination livestock care, barn hygiene, disinfection, and biosafety breeding practices to mitigate disease outbreak risks.

Executing its plan, Pú Nhung commune deployed periodic spring-summer vaccination across all villages, aiming for high coverage among eligible livestock. In this drive, the locality was allocated 7,250 vaccine doses for local buffaloes, cattle, and pigs, including 1,800 doses for anthrax, 1,900 doses for hemorrhagic septicemia in cattle and buffaloes, 2,250 doses for swine fever, and 1,300 doses for foot-and-mouth disease. Concurrently, veterinary forces administered 1,167 rabies vaccine doses and continue planned rollout in remaining villages to elevate community immunity among animals.

Prior to the arrival of veterinary cadres, Lầu A Vàng’s family in Đề Chia village, Pú Nhung commune, proactively penned up all their livestock. Vàng shared that years ago, due to an incomplete understanding of vaccination roles, some villagers remained complacent, but after witnessing disease outbreaks cause mass livestock deaths in many places, residents changed their mindsets. Supported with free vaccines from the State, villagers feel even more reassured and proactively coordinate with veterinary cadres to better protect their livestock.

Combined with vaccination, veterinary cadres intensify dissemination so residents thoroughly understand the benefits of creating active immunity for livestock. Following each injection, households receive guidance on monitoring livestock reactions, supplementing adequate feed and water, regularly cleaning barns, and spraying disinfectants to limit pathogen risks.

Nguyễn Văn Bách, Chairman of the Pú Nhung commune People’s Committee, noted that to achieve high vaccination efficiency, the commune People’s Committee directed villages to notify each household of specific vaccination schedules, requesting residents to proactively pen up livestock, manage dogs and cats, and coordinate with veterinary forces during vaccination.

Pú Nhung commune requires residents to continue monitoring livestock health post-vaccination. Upon detecting animals showing disease symptoms, residents must notify local authorities or veterinary staff for early handling to prevent disease spread.

In early July 2026, Chiềng Sinh commune organized simultaneous vaccination for all eligible livestock. The locality was supported by the province with 1,300 free doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine, 1,300 doses of bovine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine, 1,395 doses of anthrax vaccine, and 1,050 doses of swine fever vaccine.

To guarantee progress, the commune People’s Committee required livestock breeding households to fully compile livestock counts, proactively track vaccination schedules in each village, prepare pens to secure animals when veterinary forces arrive, and closely monitor livestock health post-injection to handle abnormal reactions promptly.

Proactively vaccinating livestock contributes to limiting disease outbreaks affecting livestock breeding.

Đỗ Văn Sơn, Chairman of the Chiềng Sinh commune People’s Committee, emphasized that vaccination is both a right and a responsibility for every breeding household. When each household proactively performs vaccination well, it contributes to protecting family assets and preventing disease risks from spreading in the community, leading local authorities to request departments, mass organizations, village heads, and residents to coordinate seriously to complete planned targets.

Abnormal weather conditions keep the risk of infectious diseases in livestock ever-present. Without adequate vaccination, a single outbreak can cause major damage to breeders, impact food supply, and negatively affect economic development. Therefore, alongside vaccination deployment, specialized sectors strengthen disease surveillance, guide residents on disinfection hygiene, control animal transport and slaughter, and detect suspected cases early for timely handling.

According to statistics, during phase one of 2026, the entire province administered over 50,500 doses of bovine hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine, over 21,400 doses of swine fever vaccine, 56,200 doses of avian influenza vaccine, and over 18,700 doses of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine alongside various other types.

Phạm Văn Phúc, Deputy Head of the Agriculture Sub-Department under the Department of Agriculture and Environment, affirmed that the unit directs localities to deploy livestock vaccination to correct targets and according to technical procedures, striving for maximum coverage. Concurrently, epidemiological surveillance is strengthened while guiding residents in biosafety breeding, disinfection hygiene, and proactive reporting upon detecting diseased animals.

Decisive involvement from local authorities and specialized agencies alongside proactivity among breeders creates a solid foundation to elevate livestock and poultry disease prevention efficiency. Raising vaccination rates contributes crucially to controlling outbreaks early, helping the livestock sector develop stably and sustainably, thereby driving rural economic development across the province.
