Introducing new crops into production

ĐBP - Expanding coffee and macadamia regions, pineapple fields developing toward commercial production, and experimental models of new crop varieties are painting fresh colors across Điện Biên’s agricultural landscape. The province focuses on developing strategic crops and bringing high-economic-value crop varieties into production - contributing to elevating land use efficiency and creating sustainable livelihoods for the public.

Organizing the planting of new coffee and macadamia trees alongside experimenting with low-altitude spatial economic models is being actively joined by all levels, sectors, and localities across the province. By the end of June, the entire province dug nearly 35.98 million pits for planting new coffee and macadamia trees, reaching 166.49% of the plan, with 34.96 million pits for coffee and over 1.01 million pits for macadamia. This result demonstrates immense determination across the political system and among the public to realize the target of developing key industrial crop areas, laying a foundation for Điện Biên’s agriculture to shift strongly toward large-scale commercial production.

Following preparation efforts, the progress of planting new coffee and macadamia was accelerated. To date, the entire province has newly planted nearly 6,904 ha of coffee and macadamia, reaching over 57% of the plan, including 6,116 ha of coffee and 788 ha of macadamia. Proactively securing crop seedling sources ensured quality and planting progress while significantly reducing transport costs, creating favorable conditions for localities to expand acreage according to plan.

Diversifying crops based on exploiting the advantages of each ecological zone, many localities actively expand key crop acreage toward concentrated commercial production. This is regarded as an important solution to raise production value per unit area, linking agricultural development with new-style rural area construction and elevating public income.

Taro acreage planted in Púng Bon village, Thanh Yên commune grows well, opening a crop development direction suited to local soil conditions.

In Mường Nhà and Na Sang communes, pineapple is identified as a key crop, aiming toward forming concentrated raw material areas to serve processing and consumption. Mường Nhà commune set a target to expand its honey pineapple acreage to over 500 ha by 2030. Across villages such as Pu Lau, Huổi Cảnh, Pá Chả, C5, and Na Khoang, pineapple acreage expanded rapidly recently. In Ban village alone, the Pu Lau Honey Pineapple Cooperative constructed a linked pineapple planting model spanning 300 ha.

In Na Sang commune, converting low-efficiency swidden land to pineapple cultivation yielded positive results. To date, the entire commune hosts 378 ha of pineapple, with newly planted acreage reaching 135.8 ha and harvested yield exceeding 6,800 tons. Forming a concentrated production area facilitates applying scientific and technical advances, linking consumption, and opening a sustainable commercial crop development direction, helping many households secure stable incomes compared to traditional crops.

Building upon established production areas, many localities in the province are testing new high-economic-value crop varieties suited to local ecological conditions. This serves as an important step to create additional options for residents in crop structure transformation while searching for new market-competitive products.

In mid-June, Na Sang commune organized the trial planting of 2,000 early-ripening lychee trees over an area of 5 ha in Huổi Mý village. Initial results show good tree growth and suitable adaptation to the area’s climate and soil conditions. Directly accompanying the locality during implementation, Hà Quang Thưởng, Director of the Vegetables, Flowers, and Fruits Research and Development Center under the Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute, noted that institute staff regularly stay close to the field, directly guiding technical processes for planting, care, and pest control, while closely tracking tree growth to make appropriate adjustments. Crucially, the institute will coordinate to support connecting businesses and finding post-harvest consumption markets, helping the model develop along value chains with stable outlets.

In Thanh Yên commune, developing taro is opening opportunities to exploit land resources efficiently and create new livelihoods for residents. Utilizing national target program funds for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas, 51 households in Púng Bon village joined a community production development project covering a total taro area of 8.37 ha. Following deployment, taro plants grew well with high survival rates. The model effectively utilizes production land, contributing to job creation, income enhancement, and opening crop development directions suited to local soil conditions. Participating in the model, Nạ Thị Dung from Púng Bon village shared that her family planted 2,000 of taro. The plants grow well with few pests, prompting her expectation that this will become a new production direction helping her family raise income and efficiently exploit cultivated land.

Recently, many localities across the province trialed and introduced additional new crop varieties into production, such as green J chili in areas with suitable conditions or Hoàng Kim star apple in Mường Ảng commune. Although acreage remains modest, these models initially show positive signals, contributing to diversifying crop structures and creating additional opportunities to develop local specialty agricultural products.

Simultaneously expanding strategic crops and boldly introducing new crop varieties into production demonstrates a major shift in Điện Biên’s agricultural restructuring process. Instead of following superficial trends, selected models are chosen based on surveying natural conditions, tied to scientific and technical transfers, constructing concentrated production areas, and orienting product consumption linkages.
