Expanding key crops in Phình Giàng

ĐBP - Across rolling hills of Nà Nếnh and Tin Tốc villages in Phình Giàng commune, pineapple fields are gradually replacing traditional crops like corn and cassava. Evolving from a spontaneously grown plant, pineapples are step-by-step becoming a high-value commercial crop, opening up a direction for sustainable local economic development.

Just a few years ago, honey pineapples in Phình Giàng were mainly grown around houses for domestic consumption or small-scale market sales. Recognizing that the crop thrives in the local climate and soil - yielding large, fragrant, and sweet fruits favored by the market - many households boldly converted corn and cassava land to pineapple cultivation.

Sloping land is gradually replaced by the green hue of pineapples.

During these days in the production area of Nà Nếnh village, residents are busily harvesting ripe yellow pineapples, loading them onto vehicles bound for collection points where traders await. Depending on size, traders purchase pineapples at prices ranging from VND 4,000 to 10,000/kg. Alongside harvesting, farmers proactively select seeds for reproduction.

As one of the pioneers in pineapple cultivation in Nà Nếnh village, Mùa Chờ Sùng shared that his family expanded their pineapple area in 2023, reaching approximately 6,000 m² to date. More than half of this area has been harvested. After deducting costs, his family earns about VND 50 million annually, significantly higher than previous crops. Currently, while harvesting and selecting seed plants, his family plans to expand by an additional 2,000 m² this year.

Residents of Nà Nếnh village harvest and gather pineapples awaiting traders.

The economic efficiency of pineapples is motivating many households to expand their cultivation scale, with low-efficiency production land gradually replaced by concentrated pineapple zones. Phình Giàng commune currently has over 63 ha of pineapples, of which more than 37 ha have started yielding fruit. Nà Nếnh village alone accounts for over 40 ha. Local honey pineapples are highly regarded by traders for their large fruit size (1.5 to 4 kg per fruit) and particularly intense sweetness and fragrance due to the hot, dry climate with sparse rainfall.

To further expand the growing area, local party committees and authorities deployed pineapple support models in Nà Nếnh village covering over 6 ha with 20 participating households. These families received support in seeds, fertilizer, and technical guidance tailored to local conditions.

Mùa A Cau from Nà Nếnh village stated that his family received support in seedlings and supplies to plant about 3,000 m² of pineapples. After more than six months, the survival and growth rate reached over 90 percent. Pineapple care is relatively simple with few pests, and well-tended plants begin bearing fruit in their second year. Beyond his current plot, his family plans to expand by another 2,000 m² this year.

From initial success and shifting public perception, local leadership has designated pineapples as one of the key local crops.

Commune cadres guide residents on pineapple care techniques.

Đinh Quang Đà, Vice Chairman of the Phình Giàng commune People’s Committee, stated: “In our commune, coffee, macadamia, and pineapple are three core crops well-suited to local natural conditions. For pineapples, we strive to expand the area to over 120 ha in the coming period, concentrating mainly in Nà Nếnh and Tin Tốc villages. Residents strongly agree and actively transform crop structures to expand cultivation, thereby step-by-step building concentrated raw material zones that facilitate production, harvesting, and consumption. Concurrently, the commune will continue guiding residents to apply safe production techniques to elevate agricultural value.”

Replacing fragmented, low-efficiency sloping land, pineapples are taking root and affirming their status as a key crop in Phình Giàng. As residents boldly shift their production mindset backed by local leadership in planning, support, and development orientation, pineapple hills will continue to expand, forming a crucial foundation for sustainable economic growth in this highland commune.
