Laos and Việt Nam strengthen cooperation in judicial assistance

ĐBP - A delegation from the People’s Procuracy of Udomxay Province, Laos, on November 6 held discussions with their counterparts in Điện Biên Province to share experiences and review the outcomes of their collaborative agreements.

Delegates attend the meeting between the People’s Procuracies of Điện Biên Province and Udomxay Province.

The meeting covered socio-economic developments in each province, insights from recent work, and plans for future cooperation, with a particular focus on the achievements in criminal judicial assistance.

Recently, the Điện Biên People’s Procuracy submitted a criminal case to Udomxay under mutual judicial assistance provisions, which received timely verification and response from the Lao side.

Phan Văn Kỷ, Chief Procurator of Điện Biên, expressed hopes for deeper cooperation between the two provinces’ People’s Procuracies, specifically in countering drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other criminal threats.

He noted this would bolster security, stability, and development along the shared Việt Nam-Laos border.

The People’s Procuracies of the two provinces sign a memorandum of understanding.

Building on the successes of recent years, the two delegations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key points aimed at enhancing collaboration.

The agreement emphasises the need to strengthen friendly ties between the People’s Procuracies of Điện Biên and Udomxay, in line with the MoU established by the Supreme People’s Procuracies of Việt Nam and Laos.

The MoU also outlined mechanisms for information exchange, transnational crime prevention-particularly targeting drug and human trafficking-and mutual judicial support in criminal matters, following the bilateral judicial assistance agreement.

The two sides agreed to hold regular exchanges every two years or as required, under the guidance of their respective Supreme People’s Procuracies.

This agreement, they affirmed, will continue to foster the friendship and solidarity between the provinces.
