Vitality of the Mường Ảng coffee region

ĐBP - As a major coffee-growing region in Điện Biên province, Mường Ảng commune has affirmed the key role of coffee trees in local economic development.

From establishing stable raw material zones and surveying investments for processing facilities to applying technology, elevating quality, and developing deep-processed products, the locality is forming a coffee value chain along sustainable pathways. Fresh approaches are imparting added vitality to the Mường Ảng coffee region.

Through years of development, from initial acreages, the Mường Ảng coffee region has expanded steadily, forming concentrated raw material zones and progressively establishing a brand presence in the market. The locality defines coffee as one of its key crops, accounting for a large share of public income, creating employment, and contributing to sustainable poverty reduction goals.

As the locality with the largest coffee area in the province, Mường Ảng commune has formed a coffee cultivation zone of nearly 2,000ha to date.

Currently, the entire commune of Mường Ảng has 1,963ha of coffee, of which over 1,810ha is in the commercial production phase and roughly 150ha is in the basic establishment phase. The average annual output of fresh coffee cherries reaches 12,000 to 14,000 tons, equivalent to 3,500 to 3,900 tons of commercial green coffee beans.

In 2025, coffee output reached 17,000 tons of fresh cherries, generating approximately VND 450 billion in revenue. The commune currently possesses 8 OCOP products derived from coffee, including one 4-star OCOP product.

These figures illustrate the increasingly prominent standing of coffee trees in the local agricultural economic structure. However, with a growing zone already on a large scale, the challenge is not restricted to acreage expansion or output increases. A more vital requirement is how to elevate quality, enhance bean value, build sustainable raw material zones, and deliver products to demanding consumer markets.

Stemming from that reality, the Party committee and authorities of Mường Ảng commune have progressively altered their approach toward coffee cultivation. Developing planting areas is placed within linkages with production, processing, consumption, and brand building. Alongside public engagement, businesses, cooperatives, and purchasing and processing facilities have become critical links in the local coffee value chain.

Leaders of Mường Ảng commune and partner units survey the coffee raw material zone.

By mid-August 2026, Mường Ảng commune newly planted over 180ha of coffee and replanted over 30ha. Ongoing acreage development is carried out alongside requirements to upgrade raw material zone quality, establishing a foundation for the coffee sector to develop stably over the coming years.

In Na Luông village, the Chị Em Coffee Production and Processing Cooperative is concretizing this direction. The cooperative directly manages 20ha of coffee, while concurrently linking with farming households across the commune. The linkage model helps shape a concentrated Arabica coffee raw material zone, creating conditions to standardize production protocols and oversee quality from the growing fields.

According to Tòng Thị Nọi, Director of the Chị Em Coffee Production and Processing Cooperative, increasingly stringent quality requirements compel producers to shift their mindsets and practices, seeking appropriate pathways to elevate product quality and satisfy market demand. For that reason, the cooperative focuses on overseeing phases from preliminary processing to finished goods. At the same time, it invests in deep processing, diversifying products from parchment and green coffee to specialty roasted and ground coffee. Currently, the cooperative holds a 3-star OCOP certification for its naturally processed coffee product.

To establish sustainable value for coffee, businesses and processing facilities across Mường Ảng commune have progressively elevated production capacity, paying close attention from input raw materials and processing procedures to product outputs. The traditional filter Arabica ground coffee product of the Hà Chung Coffee Processing Facility has achieved 4-star OCOP status and been granted a traceability stamp on the National Merchandise Traceability Portal. Synchronously investing in processing lines, managing input materials, and grading beans contribute to elevating quality, stabilizing products, and facilitating coffee distribution to consumers.

Coffee trees suit Mường Ảng’s soil and climate, taking root rapidly and developing well.

Another major advantage being brought into play by Mường Ảng is that its coffee products have been granted the geographical indication “Mường Ảng Coffee.” This serves as a vital foundation for the locality to continue building identification systems, managing quality, advertising, and raising product prestige. When geographical indications are tied to production protocols, processing, and traceability, the value of the local coffee brand gains further footing to affirm itself in the market.

To realize that objective, Mường Ảng proactively seeks fresh cooperation opportunities. From the beginning of the year to date, multiple domestic entities have coordinated with the locality to survey raw material areas, examine production models, and evaluate coffee development potential. These include the working delegation implementing the project “Sustainable Coffee Export Strategy and Traceability for a Green, Sustainable, and Inclusive Economy in Asia,” the 2-9 Đắk Lắk Import-Export One Member Limited Liability Company (Simexco Đắk Lắk), and Detech Coffee Joint Stock Company.

From practical surveys of raw material zones and coffee production models across the commune to seeking opportunities to enhance product value, efforts focus on farming protocols, harvesting, processing, distribution, quality enhancement, construction of deep-processing plants, and standards compliance aimed at exporting Mường Ảng coffee.

By introducing the potential of its raw material areas, the locality expects to attract additional enterprises and investors to join in developing planting zones, investing in deep processing, expanding markets, and forging closer value chain linkages between growers and businesses.

Green, sustainable production mindsets are progressively being introduced into coffee-growing regions. The Ecological Community Development Center (ECODE) has coordinated with the People’s Committee of Mường Ảng commune to implement contents relating to developing agricultural production utilizing renewable energy, green technology, and smart practices, with a focus on coffee production and consumption.

This pathway is linked to the goals of mitigating environmental pollution, enhancing production efficiency, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions, while unlocking potential to develop community tourism products tied to coffee experiences.

Representatives of Detech Coffee Joint Stock Company exchange views during the investment survey program for building a coffee deep-processing plant in Mường Ảng commune.

According to Trần Minh Giáp, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Mường Ảng commune, coffee accounts for a major share of local residents’ income. Having products granted the “Mường Ảng Coffee” geographical indication establishes the premise to elevate value, reputation, recognition, and competitiveness in the market. Therefore, the locality identifies developing coffee toward high-quality commodity production, building stable raw material zones, strengthening linkages among farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises, and stepping up processing alongside traceability.

From raw material zones to processing plants, from farmers to cooperatives, enterprises, and local authorities, step-by-step establishing tight linkages is contributing to shaping a new appearance for Mường Ảng coffee. Newly planted acreages, replanted orchards, OCOP products, invested processing lines, and programs and projects connecting with major coffee enterprises show an increasingly clear path forward, raising the value of Mường Ảng coffee beans through quality, technology, linkages, and branding.

With the foundation of a raw material zone approaching 2,000ha, substantial output, established geographical indication, alongside proactive governance, public effort, and the deepening participation of enterprises and cooperatives, Mường Ảng coffee possesses added conditions to embark upon a new development stage. The objective does not stop at generating volume, but aims toward high-quality products with transparent origins, established brands, and stronger competitiveness.

That is also the method by which Mường Ảng is imparting fresh vitality to its coffee region: taking quality as the foundation, linkages as the driving force, and branding as the long-term value, thereby raising income for the people and contributing sustainably to local socioeconomic development.
