Sweetness of the Ripening Grape Season

ĐBP – These days, Hoàng Văn Dán’s family grape garden in Bua Village, Mường Phăng Commune, Điện Biên Phủ City, is bustling with activity. As the grapes ripen, visitors flock to see the abundant vines, take pictures, and enjoy tasting the hạ đen (black summer) grapes, which are being grown in Điện Biên for the first time.

Hoàng Văn Dán’s grape garden, spanning 1,000 square metres, features 500 grape vines.

The vineyard is located along the route to the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Headquarters, making it easy for tourists to visit and experience. On weekends, many visitors, including families with women and children, travel more than 20 kilometres from the centre of Điện Biên Phủ to visit Dán’s grape garden. Everyone is eager to tour the vineyard, experience picking and tasting the first ripe grapes of the season right from the vine.

The grape variety grown in Dán’s garden is the hạ đen grape.

Entering the garden, visitors are greeted by clusters of grapes at the peak of ripeness, their plump, juicy berries hanging heavily from the vines. Despite frequent rains since early June leaving dirt on the fruit, the grapes' appeal and freshness remain undiminished. Visitors pose for photos in the vineyard, sharing their experiences with friends and family on social media.

Lò Thị Quý, from Him Lam Ward in Điện Biên Phủ City, shared: “I’ve seen these images on social media many times, but today I finally get to experience it. I’m enchanted by the scenery here as it's even more beautiful than I imagined.”

“I rented two dresses to take photos with these lush grape clusters. It’s delightful to have a beautiful photo shoot to share with everyone over the weekend,” she said.

The grape garden is a new agricultural product of Dán's family. Previously, this area was known for its Mường Phăng strawberry garden. The 1,000-square-metre vineyard with 500 hạ đen grape vines is now harvesting its first crop after more than a year of cultivation.

Dán, the vineyard owner, said: “My family had a strawberry garden to serve in previous years. But in 2023, with support from the Điện Biên Phủ City’s Economic Office, I decided to try planting hạ đen grapes.”

“After much effort, the vineyard has yielded results. Our grapes are grown organically. Throughout the growing process, we strictly adhere to technical guidelines such as cleaning the soil to avoid residues, using organic fertilizers and biological products to prevent pests and diseases,” he said.

Dán said the hạ đen grapes can be harvested twice a year, once in June and once around Tết (Lunar New Year). If well-cared for, they can yield for 13-14 years.

Visitors can enjoy grapes directly from the vineyard.

“We’ve only just opened the vineyard, but we’ve already welcomed several hundred guests. The first batch of grapes sold nearly 60 kilogrammes of ripe fruit. In about two weeks, the second batch will be in full season, expected to be sweeter and more fragrant. This will surely attract more locals and tourists to visit and purchase the produce,” said Dán.

The vineyard’s picturesque scenery attracts many young people for photos.

The initial success of Dán's agritourism model will provide more attractions for visitors to Điện Biên Phủ City. This model opens up a trend of green tourism and diversifies Điện Biên's tourism products.
