Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station: Promoting core role in forest protection and development

ĐBP - Managing, protecting, and developing more than 69,000ha of forest across a border region with complex, fragmented terrain represents an arduous task. Over recent times, the Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station has promoted its core role, proactively executing synchronized solutions, linking state management work with the active engagement of local Party committees and administrations, and promoting the self-governing role of the people.

Nguyễn Duy Thành, Deputy Head of the Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station, stated that the regional forest ranger station assumes management across 5 communes: Nà Hỳ, Nà Bủng, Quảng Lâm, Mường Chà, and Chà Tở. The Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station has proactively coordinated with specialized divisions and the People’s Committees of the 5 communes to advise local Party committees and authorities on performing state management functions regarding forestry effectively.

Since the beginning of the year, the station has issued over 100 specialized directive documents, while urging and guiding local forest rangers to advise the People’s Committees of the 5 communes on issuing 100 directive documents aligned with practical realities. Forest patrolling, inspection, and monitoring of forest developments using technology have been strengthened. Through reviewing 236 locations at risk of forest loss based on satellite imagery and the FRMS software, ranger forces coordinated with localities to verify and handle cases promptly.

From the beginning of 2026 to date, the entire area has detected and handled 15 violations of forestry legislation, comprising 12 cases of deforestation and 3 cases of illegal storage of forest products, with total damaged forest area reaching 24,391m². Cases were handled according to regulations, with total administrative fines reaching VND 91.5 million, alongside the confiscation of numerous exhibits and violating forest products. Compared to previous years, the number of violations decreased markedly, down by 48 cases compared to 2023, 30 cases compared to 2024, and 22 cases compared to 2025.

Nậm Pồ forest rangers coordinate with functional forces to inspect and review forest conditions, promptly detecting risks of forest damage in the area.

Identifying the people as the direct force playing a vital role in forest protection, the Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station focuses on legal dissemination and outreach to each village and household. During the first 6 months of the year, ranger forces coordinated to organize 95 direct dissemination sessions with 5,711 attendees; 144 broadcast sessions across village loudspeaker systems; and 280 forest patrol turns with 1,757 participants.

Forest fire prevention and fighting work was deployed proactively right from the onset of the dry season. Ranger forces advised on the establishment of 5 commune-level Forest Fire Prevention and Fighting Steering Committees and 105 village-level forest fire prevention and fighting teams and squads; guided 106 community forest owners and 150 household forest owners in formulating forest fire prevention and fighting plans tailored to local conditions. Residents were instructed on controlled burning techniques for vegetation clearing and hillside plots, while fire-risk hotspots were tracked and alerted promptly via satellite systems. Consequently, throughout the recent dry season, emerging fire spots were detected, contained, and extinguished in time, causing no loss to forests and property.

Nguyễn Văn Dũng, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Quảng Lâm commune, noted that thanks to local forest rangers proactively staying close to the grassroots, the commune administration has markedly improved state management efficiency in forestry. Beyond coordinating patrols and resolutely handling violations, forest rangers directly guide villagers in safe hillside clearing techniques, review land areas for intercropping macadamia with coffee, and designate zones for assisted natural regeneration. As a result, the awareness of Quảng Lâm residents has shifted significantly, moving from passive defense to proactive forest conservation and regarding forests as long-term livelihoods.

Linking forest protection with livelihood development is an orientation emphasized by the Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station. Local forest rangers coordinate with communes to review vacant land and barren hills eligible for implementing silvicultural projects, progressively elevating economic returns from forest land. To date, the entire area has surveyed planned land for intercropping macadamia with coffee covering approximately 620ha, while carrying out assisted natural regeneration on nearly 500ha across the 5 communes.

The Nậm Pồ Forest Ranger Station continues to step up the application of information technology, satellite imagery, and specialized software in monitoring forest changes, while elevating the capacity and responsibility of local forest rangers. Concurrently, it maintains effective coordination regulations with commune People’s Committees and armed forces stationed in the area; proactively prevents, detects, and handles acts harming forests, contributing to managing, protecting, and sustainably developing forest resources to serve socioeconomic development targets and firmly defend security and national defense in the border area.
