Laos’ Luang Namtha delegation visits macadamia plantation in Điện Biên Phủ City

ĐBP – The Laos’ Luang Namtha delegation, led by Member of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Secretary and Governor of Luang Namtha Province Viengsavath Siphandone, visited a macadamia plantation model and several historical sites in Điện Biên Phủ City on Thursday.

This visit was part of the Luang Namtha delegation's working programme in Điện Biên Province. They were accompanied by Lê Thành Đô, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, along with leaders from various provincial departments and agencies.

The Luang Namtha delegation visited the macadamia plantation of the Điện Biên Macadamia and Forestry Seed Development Investment Joint Stock Company in Na Nghè Village, Thanh Minh Commune, Điện Biên Phủ City. The plantation spans nearly 11 hectares and contains about 4,000 macadamia trees, yielding approximately 35 tonnes of fresh nuts per year.

Additionally, the company produces and sells 50,000 to 60,000 macadamia seedlings annually.

During the visit, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Đô shared with the Luang Namtha delegation that Điện Biên Province has attracted 13 projects with a total area of nearly 70,000 hectares dedicated to macadamia cultivation.

The province has planted approximately 10,000 hectares of macadamia. These plantations are developed in a concentrated manner, with projects following a closed-loop process from planting and care to harvesting, processing, and product distribution.

In 2023, Điện Biên Province sent a delegation of technical staff and businesses to three northern provinces of Laos to survey the terrain, soil, and climate, and to support these provinces in piloting macadamia cultivation.

In addition to macadamia, Điện Biên Province also focuses on developing long-term industrial crops such as rubber and coffee.

The Luang Namtha delegation explored the techniques for planting and caring for macadamia trees, as well as the economic potential of this crop. The leaders of Luang Namtha expressed a desire for Điện Biên to continue sharing more experience and techniques in macadamia seedling cultivation. They also suggested that Luang Namtha's relevant agencies engage in deeper discussions with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Điện Biên Province to study the potential for developing macadamia cultivation in Luang Namtha Province.

The Luang Namtha delegation also visited historical sites, including A1 Hill, the Điện Biên Phủ Victory Museum, and General De Castries' bunker.

At these sites, the delegation was briefed on the resilient struggle of the Vietnamese army and people that led to victory in the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign more than 70 years ago.
