In 2013, the family of Là Văn Chanh in Pha Nàng village, Tuần Giáo commune, began trial planting 120 macadamia trees. By 2018, the first macadamia trees yielded harvest and have maintained revenue across the years. Macadamia trees have steadily asserted superior efficiency on his family’s sloping land. In 2025, with an output of 3.3 tons of nuts, Chanh’s family achieved revenue of VND 115.5 million, earning a profit of around VND 95 million after deducting expenses. Recognizing the practical benefits, his family continued registering to participate in a value-chain production linkage project across an area of 1ha. The family’s newly planted macadamia acreage is currently growing vigorously.
Economic efficiency from the macadamia cultivation model of Chanh’s family demonstrates the potential of this crop when invested in and cared for with proper technical procedures. In particular, developing macadamia cultivation tied to linkage projects and cooperative groups aims to progressively overcome fragmented, smallholder production. Participating in the model, villagers gain access to quality saplings, fertilizers, and agronomic care guidelines.
Lò Văn Chung, a member of the Chá Village Macadamia Cooperative Group, Tuần Giáo commune, stated: “My family has grown more than 2ha of macadamia since 2023, receiving support in saplings, lime, fertilizer, and technical protocols. Thanks to applying proper technical procedures, our macadamia orchard is growing and developing very well, holding promise to bring high and stable income to our family.”
According to statistics, Tuần Giáo commune currently features over 2,544ha of macadamia. Within this, the locality has deployed 35 value-chain production linkage projects associated with macadamia nut products over a total area of 1,145ha, engaging more than 2,000 participating households across 26 cooperative groups. Cà Văn Chương, leader of the Chá village Macadamia Cooperative Group, Tuần Giáo commune, said: “Currently, several households in the village with macadamia planted since 2018 have begun harvesting.
Typical examples include the families of Lò Văn Sương and Lầu A Hử, earning from VND 30 million to VND 50 million per year. In 2023, villagers continued joining production linkage projects, receiving assistance with seedlings, fertilizer, and techniques. To date, the village has expanded to nearly 100ha with over 80 participating households. Currently, villagers have completed weeding, fertilizing, and pruning; the trees are thriving and developing excellently.”
Phạm Hữu Chiến, Vice Chairman of the Tuần Giáo commune People’s Committee, stated: “The locality identifies macadamia as one of its key flagship crops, bearing long-term significance in restructuring the agricultural sector. Therefore, the commune directs the development of raw material zones anchored in quality, production linkages, processing, and market demand; avoiding chasing sheer acreage while prioritizing substantive economic efficiency. Furthermore, the commune has signed an agreement with TH Group regarding product off-take and macadamia procurement for villagers across the commune.”
To date, Tuần Giáo commune has had 7 macadamia products recognized as 3-star OCOP. This represents initial success in efforts to enhance quality, refine packaging aesthetics, and build brands for the products. In 2026, the locality is expected to finalize dossiers proposing the evaluation and certification of 2 additional products, helping expand the merchandise catalog and sharpen market competitiveness.
Across the commune, there are currently 3 macadamia processing facilities: Thoa Doãn, Thoa Quàng, and Việt Hà. Among them, the Việt Hà macadamia processing facility stands out as a bright spot, having boldly invested in modern machinery and progressively perfected workflows from preliminary processing, drying, cracking, and grading to packaging. To date, the facility has manufactured and processed 5 product lines, including 3 macadamia products recognized as 3-star OCOP and certified under international HACCP food safety standards. Remarkably, Việt Hà macadamia products have been officially served on Việt Nam Airlines flights.
Vũ Việt Hà, owner of the Việt Hà macadamia facility, stated: “Investing in technology, elevating quality, and diversifying products is the mandatory path to add value to macadamia nuts. Only when products satisfy stringent food safety standards and packaging specifications can the facility secure opportunities to step into premium distribution channels, while contributing to promoting the Điện Biên macadamia brand to consumers.”
The presence of macadamia products on flights does not simply unlock an added sales channel. It also represents an opportunity for the local macadamia brand to reach new consumer segments, elevate brand recognition, and inspire processing facilities to sustain investment. To maintain markets, units must guarantee consistent quality, stable supply, and the ability to fulfill partners’ rigorous requirements.
In the coming period, Tuần Giáo commune will continue consolidating linkage models, guiding citizens to elevate raw material zone quality, encouraging deep processing, and stepping up product promotion. Building brands, ensuring traceability, expanding OCOP items, and participating in trade promotion activities are identified as critical solutions to broaden markets. Simultaneously, linking with major companies and corporate groups aims to guarantee stable off-take outlets, raising incomes for the people.
