Localities and operating units are linking passion fruit expansion with the application of science and technology in production and establishing off-take partnerships to pave a sustainable development pathway for passion fruit.
In 2024, the “For a Developing Điện Biên” Cooperative partnered with farmers across Thanh Nưa commune and Điện Biên Phủ ward to develop passion fruit under a production model tied to product off-take. To date, this linked cultivation area has reached more than 3ha, with an average yield of roughly 40 tons of fruit per crop season.
During the model’s rollout, the cooperative committed to guaranteed purchasing while accompanying farmers from the initial production phase. The entire linked area employs automated irrigation systems, conserving water, reducing manual labor, and maintaining appropriate moisture levels for the vines. Notably, the cooperative introduced AI-integrated nutrient testing equipment into cultivation to analyze soil nutritional status. Based on the test readings, producers can determine precisely which nutrients the plants lack to make suitable adjustments, rather than relying predominantly on empirical experience for crop care.
According to Trần Văn Sơn, Director of the “For a Developing Điện Biên” Cooperative, technology adoption helps farmers reduce physical labor, cut input costs, and elevate cultivation efficiency. When vines are tended according to proper technical standards, passion fruit grows uniformly, developing large, plump, and high-quality fruit, thereby enhancing product value.
To bring the product closer to consumers, the cooperative conducts frequent livestream sessions directly in the orchards. Short video clips introducing farming and harvesting processes are routinely posted on social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, facilitating wider passion fruit promotion and establishing direct connection channels with customers, traders, and wholesale purchasing units.
Trần Văn Sơn shared: “The cooperative communicates product stories from the moment seedlings are planted, through flowering and fruiting, until harvest so that consumers can track the entire production lifecycle. When the product is widely known, traders and off-take buyers proactively reach out. As a result, passion fruit reaching harvest is fundamentally consumed immediately, mitigating situations where produce has to wait for market outlets.”
Practical results from the model demonstrate that for passion fruit, the challenge lies not only in achieving high productivity, but also in organizing production to yield commodities that meet market demands. This also provides the baseline for specialized agricultural agencies to continue surveying and testing passion fruit adaptability across localities with suitable conditions.
Since early 2026, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed specialized divisions to survey and establish pilot models across several communes and wards, including Xa Dung, Núa Ngam, Thanh Yên, and Điện Biên Phủ ward. The goal is to evaluate specific vegetative growth, yield, quality, and economic efficiency, establishing grounds to orient growing zone expansion in the coming period.
In Pa Pốm village, Điện Biên Phủ ward, a 1ha passion fruit experimental model was deployed in 2026 with the participation of Vàng A Chí, Secretary of the village Party Cell. Converting plots previously dedicated to maize and upland rice, Chí registered to test the new crop. To date, the passion fruit orchard has grown vigorously and yielded harvests, reaching a productivity of more than 6 tons/ha.
Vàng A Chí shared: “Through direct cultivation, passion fruit has shown large, abundant fruit and good quality. Moving forward, I will mobilize villagers to convert a portion of their swidden land to valuable crops such as passion fruit, coffee, and macadamia, thereby step-by-step opening new economic directions and raising incomes.”
Following specialized agency assessments confirming suitable soil and climatic conditions for passion fruit, residents of Xa Dung commune registered to participate in models across Trống Sư and Cồ Dề villages. To date, the entire commune has planted 3.2ha of experimental passion fruit in Trống Sư village.
In Núa Ngam commune, the passion fruit model is being deployed across 13ha. According to Nguyễn Thành Trung, Chairman of the Núa Ngam commune People’s Committee, rolling out the model aims primarily to evaluate the crop’s compatibility with local practical conditions, its yield, and the resulting economic value. Grounded on trial results, the commune will assess the feasibility of expanding cultivation in the coming period if passion fruit proves genuinely effective.
According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has 27.9ha of passion fruit, with more than 24ha newly planted in 2026. This figure indicates that passion fruit cultivation is trending upward, though the majority of acreage remains in the initial establishment and evaluation phase. Therefore, expanding passion fruit cultivation going forward must be placed within tight linkages connecting growing zones, standard production processes, science and technology applications, and consumption markets. Alongside ongoing model evaluations, specialized agencies and local authorities must guide farmers in safe production, improve crop quality, and reinforce linkages with cooperatives and enterprises to establish stable raw material supply zones step by step.
