Instead of merely focusing on volume output, growers and processing establishments are increasingly prioritizing bean quality, processing protocols, and off-take linkages. This represents a clear direction to establish a foundation for sharpening product competitiveness, effectively exploiting cultivation zone potentials, and improving local incomes.
Endowed by nature with favorable climate and pedological conditions, Mường Ảng enjoys advantageous conditions to develop Arabica coffee trees. While products were previously consumed primarily as fresh cherries or preliminarily processed parchment coffee, in recent years, growers and processing establishments have emphasized quality improvement and product diversification, step by step establishing distinct brand identities.
In Na Luống village, Mường Ảng commune, coffee trees have long been entwined with the livelihoods of local residents. Tapping on-site raw materials, the Chị Em (Sisters) coffee group has progressively developed processed product lines, generating added value for local coffee beans. Currently, the group maintains 3 product lines, with ground coffee certified with 3-star OCOP.
Lò Thị Tiên, head of the Chị Em coffee group in Mường Ảng commune, stated: “Our group focuses on controlling every stage from tending and harvesting to processing to sustain product quality. Currently, our coffee is procured by enterprises in Hanoi and several provinces and cities. Developing processed products helps the group broaden distribution channels while securing reliable off-take outlets for local farmers’ raw materials.”
Alongside production groups, purchasing and processing enterprises play a vital role in elevating coffee quality. At Việt Bắc Coffee Export Co., Ltd., investments in machinery and equipment are deployed alongside technical guidance for growers. The enterprise organizes training sessions across villages, assisting farmers in refining tending and harvesting protocols, improving raw material quality, and reducing production costs.
Tòng Văn Tiện, representative of Việt Bắc Coffee Export Co., Ltd., noted: “Our company has procured and processed coffee in Điện Biên for many years and constructed a preliminary processing plant in Mường Ảng commune. To satisfy export standards, the enterprise concentrates on elevating raw material quality, investing in production equipment, and delivering technical instructions to farmers right in the growing zones.”
In processing, raw material quality continues to serve as the decisive factor determining product aroma, flavor, and prestige. Hà Chung Coffee Processing Establishment in Mường Ảng commune partners with orchard owners, standardizing technical specifications from tending to harvesting to control quality directly at the raw material base. Hồ Văn Chung, owner of Hà Chung Coffee Processing Establishment, stated: “Our establishment screens input ingredients rigorously, requiring 100% tree-ripened cherries and utilizing 100% Arabica varieties to guarantee flavor profile and product quality. Executing contracts with orchard owners right from the crop-care stage while restricting toxic agrochemicals also enables us to proactively secure supplies, maintaining quality and brand reputation.”
From production groups to processing enterprises, these practices demonstrate a clear shift away from raw material trading toward prioritizing quality, processing, and branded product development. As stages are interconnected, growers secure greater off-take stability, while processors become more proactive in quality control and fulfilling market demand.
Mường Ảng is currently the locality with the largest coffee acreage in Điện Biên province, with over 2,100ha, of which more than 1,700ha have entered commercial harvest. Coupled with acreage expansion, the commune prioritizes executing cultivation and consumption linkage projects, aiming to enhance economic returns per unit of land area.
Lù Văn Cường, Deputy Head of the Economic Office of Mường Ảng commune, said: “The locality prioritizes allocated resources to deploy coffee cultivation and off-take linkage projects, creating favorable conditions for residents to transition from low-efficiency annual crops to long-term industrial crops and perennial varieties of higher economic value. Simultaneously, the commune reinforces connections between raw material zones, processing establishments, and purchasing enterprises.”
Expanding acreage is an essential prerequisite to build raw material zones, yet long-term viability hinges upon product quality and off-take capability. Therefore, organizing standardized production workflows, raising the processing ratio, building brands, and maintaining durable linkages between growers and enterprises must be deployed synchronously.
From coffee swiddens on hillside slopes to products carrying local brands, Mường Ảng is step by step generating added value for its flagship crop. Continuing to elevate raw material zone quality, investing in processing, and broadening markets will serve as critical elements for Mường Ảng coffee to sharpen competitiveness, raise incomes for the people, and actively contribute to local economic growth.
