Diversifying livelihoods, elevating incomes for farmers

ĐBP - Recently, by proactively diversifying livelihoods and developing integrated economic models tailored to real-world conditions, many farmers across the province have risen to mitigate risks, stabilize their daily lives, and effectively elevate their incomes.

Keenly grasping market demand, Nguyễn Văn Huyến, residing in Thanh Nưa commune, proactively developed an integrated economic model suited to his family’s circumstances. With approximately 3,000m² of water surface for fish farming, alongside raising over 20 pigs and nearly 1,000 chickens and ducks, his family progressively established a production model with diversified revenue streams.

Throughout production, he proactively applies technical advances, prioritizes livestock care and disease prevention, and regularly investigates market demand to adjust his rearing scale appropriately. By diversifying production activities, his family sustains a relatively stable income stream. Each year, the model delivers earnings exceeding VND 200 million, contributing to elevating their living standards and creating added motivation for the family to continue expanding and developing livelihoods tailored to real-world conditions.

Nguyễn Văn Huyến shared: “Previously, my family only operated on a small, fragmented scale, and later realized that relying on a single revenue source was precarious. Therefore, my family borrowed additional capital from the Farmers’ Union and made use of our available land area, taking on suitable ventures - raising fish alongside pigs, chickens, and ducks. During execution, we learned through hands-on experience, adjusting wherever efficiency lagged. Managing diverse activities is more labor-intensive, but it provides additional income sources; when the price of one animal drops, another compensates, making family finances far more stable.”

Phạm Văn Thiện, Tin Tốc village, Mường Ảng commune, raises goats to increase household income.

For Phạm Văn Thiện in Mường Ảng commune, livelihood diversification is demonstrated through combining coffee cultivation with raising goats, free-range hill chickens, and fish farming, thereby generating supplementary revenue streams and augmenting production efficiency. To date, Thiện maintains over 7ha of coffee, nearly 30 goats, over 200 poultry, and a fish pond spanning nearly 1,500m², generating an annual income of nearly VND 500 million.

Phạm Văn Thiện stated: “Previously, my family relied primarily on coffee trees; later, I undertook additional models to secure more income. Each crop and livestock variety demands different care techniques and offers distinct harvest times, so combining them reduces reliance on a single source. Crucially, one must know how to capitalize on available conditions and align them with family capabilities and market needs to ensure long-term sustainability.”

In Núa Ngam commune, the commune Farmers’ Union has recently accelerated communication, mobilizing members to transform production methods and select crops and livestock suited to practical conditions. The Union focuses on guiding members in adopting science and technology, exchanging experience, and advancing economic models compatible with pedological conditions and market demands, thereby elevating production efficacy.

Vì Văn Sinh, Vice Chairman of the Núa Ngam commune Farmers’ Union, stated: “Depending on the circumstances of each household, village, and village, the Union communicates and mobilizes residents to select suitable production orientations. Beyond cultivation and animal husbandry, villagers can develop additional trades and services to capitalize on available resources. The Union also regularly grasps member needs to provide guidance and support during production, helping farmers progressively elevate incomes and stabilize their livelihoods.”

To furnish farmers with added conditions to expand production and diversify livelihoods, Farmers’ Union chapters across the province have focused on providing support in capital, knowledge, and vocational skills. To date, the provincial Farmers’ Union has deployed loans under the Farmers’ Support Fund across 74 projects. Through entrusted operations with the Việt Nam Bank for Social Policies, in the first nine months of the year, total outstanding debt managed by provincial Farmers’ Union organizations reached nearly VND 1,600 billion, serving nearly 20,300 borrowing households. Alongside credit support, during the first nine months of the year, Union chapters coordinated vocational training and skills enhancement for nearly 1,200 members, creating conditions for farmers to elevate knowledge, proactively choose appropriate production paths, and develop additional income streams.

Quàng Văn Phương, Deputy Head of the Farmers’ Affairs Board under the provincial Việt Nam Fatherland Front Committee, stated: “In the coming time, the provincial Farmers’ Union will continue surveying and grasping member needs and practical local conditions to orient the development of suitable livelihood models that deliver economic efficiency and long-term viability. The Union focuses on supporting farmers in applying science and technology, advancing digital transformation in agricultural produce production, processing, and off-take, while strengthening linkages with cooperatives and enterprises to secure input supplies and guaranteed product consumption. The Union encourages developing products with local advantages, building brands, and expanding consumer markets, thereby elevating produce value and creating stable income streams for farmers.”

Diversifying livelihoods and developing integrated economic models serve as practical solutions helping farmers proactively adapt to markets, mitigate risks, and achieve stable income growth. The proactive transformation of farmers combined with the springboard of practical support policies establishes a solid foundation to drive rural economic development with increasing efficiency.
