In Bồ Hóng village, Mường Thanh ward, across an area of 4.5ha, the Cara Farm estate cultivates over 2,000 green-skinned pomelo, Ruby pomelo, and red-fleshed orange trees following biological and organic methods. Rather than relying primarily on chemical fertilizers, the farm focuses on soil rehabilitation combined with microbial organic fertilizer applications to foster favorable conditions for soil microorganisms and earthworms to flourish. Soil is excavated into pits, sun-fallowed, and supplemented with microbial organic fertilizer, helping improve the soil environment and supporting plant growth.
According to Nguyễn Thị Lan Hương, Director of Cara Farm Vietnam Company Limited, focusing on soil nourishment helps plants thrive and reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers. To date, the fruit orchards have maintained stable yields, and their products are trusted by consumers. In practice, applying biological solutions not only supports crop care but also contributes to maintaining soil fertility and enhancing long-term land productivity. Thanks to this, in 2022, Cara Farm was granted an organic agricultural product certificate, becoming the first establishment certified organic for fruit trees in the province.
In Yên Trường hamlet, Thanh Yên commune, a high-tech biological greenhouse model was commissioned in early 2026, jointly deployed by the Department of Agriculture and Environment and Niinuma Tomofarm Company Limited. The project comprises three greenhouses covering a total area of 1,080m2 with an investment capital of over VND 13.4 billion. The system is equipped with synchronized modern Japanese technologies, ranging from automated drip irrigation, temperature and humidity controls to nutrient sensors and digital software-managed production.
According to the Agricultural Extension - Plant and Animal Breeding Center (Department of Agriculture and Environment), the enclosed structure helps the model cut irrigation water consumption by 30% to 40%, curb pests and diseases, and elevate crop yields by 1.5 to 2 times compared to conventional farming methods. In the initial phase, the greenhouses concentrate on producing safe vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, cabbages, and beans, with an anticipated output of approximately 80 to 100 tons per year. The model enables superior control over production parameters, conserving resources, boosting productivity, and broadening the development of high-tech agriculture across the province.
From soil rehabilitation and biological preparations to high-tech greenhouse applications, these models are illustrating diverse approaches within the transition of agricultural production methods in Điện Biên. Alongside deploying concrete models, the province is step-by-step encouraging the use of organic and biological fertilizers, promoting the utilization of crop residues, forestry by-products, and livestock waste to produce compost, curbing dependence on synthetic chemical inputs and minimizing environmental impacts.
Implementing the Project on Developing Organic Fertilizer Production and Use through 2030, with a Vision to 2050 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the province encourages enterprises, cooperatives, and farming households to invest in organic fertilizer production, capitalizing on available raw materials for agricultural recycling. Currently, the entire province utilizes approximately 4,595 tons of biological fertilizers and over 6,072 tons of non-commercial organic fertilizers each year. Developing these fertilizer sources helps diversify plant nutrient solutions, establishing a foundation to gradually reduce chemical fertilizer usage.
Presently, several agricultural production zones across the province have earned quality certifications under organic and biological standards. Among them, 13ha of winter melons cultivated by Nam Dương Cooperative in Mường Chà commune attained VietGAP certification; 1.29ha of vegetables, roots, and fruits by Điện Biên Import-Export Trading Joint Stock Company earned GlobalGAP certification. Certified organic acreage has reached 8.5ha, comprising 5ha of tea managed by the Phan Thanh Ngọt establishment in Mường Lạn commune and 3.5ha of fruit orchards operated by Cara Farm Vietnam Company Limited in Mường Thanh ward.
Focus is placed not only on farming stages, but also on applying biotechnology across agricultural processing, trading, and consumption. The province houses three processing and trading establishments certified under HACCP standards - including Hồng Kỳ Quốc Tế Coffee Joint Stock Company, Hải An Company Limited, and Hương Linh Điện Biên Province Company Limited - alongside two aquaculture facilities certified under VietGAP. Quality and food safety inspections for agricultural, forestry, and fishery products have been intensified through the application of science, technology, and rapid test kits to detect pesticide residues, nitrates, and banned veterinary substances.
Điện Biên sets a target that by 2030, industrial organic fertilizers will account for at least 30% of total fertilizer consumption in agricultural production. For biotechnology to genuinely serve as an engine driving green agriculture, Điện Biên needs to step up scientific and technological transfers, assisting farmers, cooperatives, and enterprises in accessing solutions suited to production realities. This should be combined with replicating effective models linked along production, processing, and off-take supply chains. Through these efforts, the province will progressively elevate agricultural quality and product value, reduce environmental impacts, improve rural incomes, and build a steadfast groundwork for sustainable agricultural development.
