Điện Biên sees rich heritage resources

ĐBP - The traditions, customs, and festivals of 19 ethnic groups have created a diverse and distinctive cultural identity for Điện Biên. Adding to this is a vast cultural heritage system with 22 national intangible cultural heritages, including the Then practice of the Tày, Nùng, and Thái people, as well as the Thái Xòe dance, both of which have been inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The province has about 50 traditional festivals and 35 recognized historical, cultural, architectural, and scenic relics. Among them is the specially designated national relic site of the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield, comprising 45 component relics, recently supplemented with 5 more sites such as command posts and battlefields of units participating in the campaign.

This cultural heritage, together with historical relics and traditional festivals, constitutes a valuable resource for tourism development in Điện Biên if effectively preserved, promoted, and developed into suitable tourism products.

Điện Biên is best known among visitors for its historical relics of the Điện Biên Phủ battlefield, with iconic landmarks such as Hill A1, the De Castries bunker, and the Command Post of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign in Mường Phăng. Among cultural heritages, the Thái Xòe dance is perhaps the most popular, as nearly every exchange and experience activity can end with a circle dance. Yet, the wealth of diverse and unique cultural heritage from the province’s ethnic communities remains largely undiscovered and underexplored. This calls for stronger efforts by cultural agencies and local communities to research, design, and develop distinctive tourism products tied to each village and ethnic group to attract visitors.

Cultural tourism products should encourage community participation, allowing ethnic residents to both increase income and preserve their cultural identity while introducing their heritage to visitors. In recent years, Điện Biên has revived some festivals and traditional craft villages, promoted community-based and cultural tourism, and showcased unique ethnic cultures. Some cultural tourism villages have built traditional houses, served signature ethnic dishes, and offered cultural and artistic performances that appeal to visitors.

For example, Phiêng Lơi Cultural Village (Điện Biên Phủ ward) and Mển Village (Thanh Nưa commune) attract tourists with the Thái culture and cuisine, from stilt houses and xòe dances to diverse grilled dishes. Na Sang 2 Village (Núa Ngam commune) is known for Lào brocade weaving and the annual water-splashing festival. In Sín Thầu commune, Hà Nhì women preserve the art of traditional costume-making, showcasing meticulous color and pattern design. In 2024, Điện Biên revived and staged “Huyền tích U Va,” reenacting the Thái legend of the piêu scarf and the ban flower, in a grand setting with water wheels, ban blossoms, and rice fields. The Si La people celebrate the new rice festival and maintain traditional weaving, while the Cống people preserve ancestral rituals. Each ethnic group’s distinct cultural identity adds to the province’s diversity and appeal for cultural tourism.

Community-based tourism models linked with new rural development and cultural preservation have been established in several villages. Many traditional ethnic festivals recognized as national intangible cultural heritage have been revived and maintained, attracting tourists to experience and explore. Điện Biên’s unique culture and cuisine have also been promoted in Hà Nội, Hồ Chí Minh City, Thanh Hóa, and Luang Prabang (Laos) during cultural tourism weeks, drawing both domestic and international visitors. Some interlinked tourism products are gradually taking shape, such as the “Hà Nội - Điện Biên - Luang Prabang” historical-cultural route and the “Điện Biên - Lai Châu - Sa Pa” Northwest route, combining natural exploration with local cultural experiences.

At present, Điện Biên is alive with cultural and tourism promotion activities as part of the 2025 Northwest Quintessence Festival - Điện Biên. This regional-scale event, co-organized with Northwest provinces and Hồ Chí Minh City, features diverse programs to celebrate cultural values, promote tourism potential, and connect tourism markets. Visitors can enjoy unique cultural spaces, food festivals, and Northwest tourism products.

The image of Điện Biên as a safe, friendly, and attractive destination is being showcased and promoted through cultural and tourism highlights at the 2025 Northwest Quintessence Festival - Điện Biên. The event is an opportunity for Điện Biên to leverage its cultural heritage resources, expand tourism, and strengthen connections with other provinces and cities to unlock its full tourism potential.
