Preparations for the Pu Tó Cọ mountain climbing tournament are being actively deployed by specialized agencies, steering toward a successful, safe tournament that disseminates historical values and promotes Điện Biên’s tourism potential.

In the footsteps of the General

Pu Tó Cọ is situated in the Mường Phăng area, where the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Command Headquarters was stationed. Amid primeval mountain forests, this location preserves traces of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Observation Post, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,700m above sea level. More than 70 years have elapsed, yet the relics of a heroic era remain present, recalling the years our armed forces and people forged the historic Điện Biên Phủ Victory.

The path leading to the summit of Pu Tó Cọ winds through mountain forests. Natural landscapes and historical relics create a distinct character. This journey of exploration does not merely involve studying artifacts, examining archives, or listening to past stories, but offers a firsthand physical experience along every segment and steep ascent leading to a site that played an essential strategic role during the campaign.

With that significance, the mountain climbing tournament conquering the Pu Tó Cọ peak under the theme “In the Footsteps of the General” blends sporting competition with traditional education, bringing historical monuments closer to citizens and tourists. Conquering the summit offers participants an opportunity to gain a clearer physical sense of the terrain and operational environment of the Campaign Command Headquarters of yesteryear, deepening their understanding and appreciation of Mường Phăng’s historical values.

The tournament features four competition categories: men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team, and women’s team, over a shared distance of 17km. Starting from the Reception House of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Command Headquarters relic site, athletes follow trails up to the Pu Tó Cọ summit, descend toward Che Căn village, traverse through the center of Mường Phăng commune, and return to the starting line.

Having competed in the previous year’s tournament, Nguyễn Xuân Khánh, from Điện Biên Phủ ward, registered once again to challenge himself in this year’s edition. Khánh shared: “Participating in last year’s tournament, I clearly felt the rigorous challenges of the climbing course, especially steep stretches demanding great endurance and determination. But once standing on the Pu Tó Cọ summit and learning about the landmark attached to the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign, I found the journey profoundly meaningful. This year, I registered again to hone my physical fitness, push personal limits, re-experience the trail, and gain deeper insights into the history of my homeland.”

For athletes, conquering Pu Tó Cọ is not merely a test of physical strength and stamina, but a journey exploring a landmark linked to the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign. Across every slope and winding bend through the Mường Phăng wilderness, participants are afforded opportunities to explore natural landscapes, visit the campaign observation post firsthand, and understand the positioning and role of Pu Tó Cọ in monitoring battlefield developments in former times.

Trần Hải Hà, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated: “The tournament conquering the Pu Tó Cọ peak aims to spur the mass sports movement while creating an experiential tourism product linked with historical monuments, opening up opportunities for athletes and travelers to discover mountain terrain and study the history of the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign. Through this, pride in local traditions is nurtured, particularly among the youth. The conquest of the Pu Tó Cọ peak also helps introduce the landscapes, historical sites, and tourism potential of Mường Phăng, progressively intertwining sports with cultural and historical experiences locally.”

Ready to conquer Pu Tó Cọ

To ensure the tournament conquering the Pu Tó Cọ peak unfolds safely and according to schedule, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism conducted field surveys to inspect the course from the Điện Biên Phủ Campaign Command Headquarters relic site up to the Pu Tó Cọ summit and across Che Căn village. Based on field assessments, the Organizing Board devised deployment schemes for logistics personnel to assist and guide athletes and handle emerging contingencies. Medical plans, track safety guarantees, and inter-force coordination measures have been rolled out to mitigate risks, ensuring athletes can compete with peace of mind.

Alongside technical preparations, Mường Phăng commune proactively carried out outreach and promotion for the tournament. The commune General Service Center posted updates across social media platforms, introducing event schedules, the overarching theme, and primary program contents. Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in designing media visuals helped establish distinctive promotional highlights, broadening information accessibility and drawing interest from residents, athletes, and visitors.

Trần Văn Tuấn, Chairman of the Mường Phăng commune People’s Committee, noted: “The event helps showcase the image of Mường Phăng commune and attract visitors. The commune is actively preparing reception and logistical conditions to serve participants. Sightseeing, alongside exhibition stalls featuring OCOP products, cultural and tourism items, and local specialties organized within the framework of the tournament, offers Mường Phăng a prime opportunity to promote indigenous products, encourage residents to participate in service development, and create favorable impressions among athletes and tourists.”
