After 40 years of implementing renewal, Vietnam has achieved great and comprehensive achievements, forming the new fortune, potential, and position seen today. Independence, national sovereignty, and a peaceful environment are maintained; politics and society are stable; the economy is increasingly developing; national defense and security are firmly guaranteed; and people’s lives in all aspects are constantly improving.
From a poor and backward country, Vietnam has escaped the group of low-income countries; becoming the 4th largest economy in ASEAN and the 32nd in the world. In 2025, GDP is estimated to reach USD 514 billion; GDP per capita is USD 5,026, a 25-fold increase after three decades. Notably, from a food-deficient country, Vietnam has become one of the top three rice exporters in the world, firmly ensuring national food security. Economic growth associated with social progress and justice is the thorough viewpoint of the Party. Thanks to that, the poverty rate dropped sharply from 58% in 1993 to 1.3% in 2025.
The people’s intellectual level and the quality of human resources have been constantly improved, with nearly 99% of adults being literate, and the number of university and college students increasing nearly 20 times compared to the beginning of the renewal period. The average life expectancy reached 74.6 years, and the health insurance coverage rate exceeded 94%, showing a marked improvement in the quality of people’s lives. The latest data from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) shows that Vietnam is in the group of countries with high human development with an HDI index ranking 93rd out of total countries and territories.
Vietnam’s position and prestige in the international arena are increasingly affirmed and enhanced. From a country that was once besieged and embargoed, Vietnam has now established diplomatic relations with 194 countries and expanded economic and trade relations with more than 230 countries and territories. Relationships are becoming deeper and more sustainable; especially the formation of a relationship framework with 38 countries, including 13 comprehensive strategic partners, 10 strategic partners, and 15 comprehensive partners. Vietnam has established comprehensive strategic partnerships with 4/5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Vietnam has been demonstrating prominently its role as a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community, making positive contributions to peace, stability, and development, which is highly appreciated by the world.
In 2025, the total national import-export turnover reached over USD 930 billion, an increase of 18.2% compared to the previous year; in which exports increased by 17%, imports increased by 19.4%, continuing a trade surplus of about USD 20 billion, contributing to firmly consolidating the national trade balance.
Those impressive figures affirm Vietnam’s increasingly enhanced international prestige and position as a reliable partner and an active and responsible member of the international community. Vietnam is a bright spot highly appreciated by the world for social safety and stability; having new ways in development leadership and governance, breakthroughs in thinking and vision, demonstrating steadfast bravery to overcome all difficulties and challenges, proactively seizing opportunities, creating development, and creating a solid premise for the new stage of the country.
After 40 years of renewal, the country’s fortune, potential, position, and international prestige have been raised to a new height. Great achievements of historical significance have affirmed that the Party’s renewal line is correct and creative; our country’s path to socialism is suitable for Vietnam’s reality and the trend of the times. This is the foundation for the entire Party, the entire people, and the entire army to be self-reliant, confident, and march forward strongly in the era of the nation’s rise.
