Điện Biên holds memorial and burial service for remains of volunteer soldiers sacrificed in Laos

ĐBP - On the morning of May 27, at the Tông Khao Martyrs’ Cemetery, Điện Biên province held a visitation, memorial, and burial ceremony for the remains of Việt Nam volunteer soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Laos, brought back during the second phase of the 2025 - 2026 dry season.

This is one of the activities of the 500-day-and-night Campaign to accelerate the search, collection, and identification of martyrs’ remains in accordance with Decision No.27/QĐ-BCĐQG of the National Steering Committee on the search, collection, and identification of martyrs’ remains.

Attending and chairing the ceremony was Phạm Thị Thanh Trà, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister, and Head of the National Steering Committee on the search, collection, and identification of martyrs’ remains; leaders of several central committees, ministries, and sectors; representatives of the General Department of Political Affairs, Việt Nam People’s Army; representatives of the Special Working Committee of Northern Lao provinces, the High Command of Military Region 2, and Steering Committee 515 of Military Region 2.

Representing Điện Biên province was Trần Tiến Dũng, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, and Head of the provincial National Assembly Delegation; members of the Standing Board of the provincial Party Committee; the Standing Board of the provincial People’s Council, leaders of the People’s Committee, the Việt Nam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, provincial departments, local authorities, and a large number of youth union members and local residents.

In a solemn and emotional atmosphere, delegates, officials, soldiers, and people of all ethnic groups in Điện Biên province offered incense and observed a minute of silence to remember the immense merits of the martyrs who bravely sacrificed for the noble international mission.

The reception, memorial, and burial of the remains of martyrs who died in Laos during the second phase of the 2025 - 2026 dry season included 9 sets of remains. Specifically, a memorial and burial ceremony was held for 8 unidentified remains at the Tông Khao Martyrs’ Cemetery, Điện Biên province, while 1 identified set of remains was handed over to Hưng Yên province. This is the result of the close and responsible coordination among forces, especially the Martyrs’ Remains Search and Collection Team and the functional agencies of Military Region 2 during the process of searching and exhuming remains in Laos over the past time.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Văn Đoạt emphasized: “During the arduous years of resistance, Việt Nam volunteer soldiers and experts fought bravely alongside the revolutionary army and people of Laos, achieving many glorious victories. Those contributions played an important role in the national liberation cause of the fraternal Lao people, while firmly defending the Việt Nam Fatherland. The names, careers, and immense dedications of the heroic martyrs will forever be respected, remembered, and eternally appreciated by the Party, State, and people of both nations.”

Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Thị Thanh Trà also performs the ritual of dropping memorial flowers before the burial.

The Party Committee, government, armed forces, and people of all ethnic groups in Điện Biên province vow to unite as one; continue to promote patriotic traditions, revolutionary spirit, and the will of self-reliance and self-strengthening. They are determined to successfully carry out the cause of building and firmly defending the Fatherland. At the same time, they will constantly consolidate and nurture the special solidarity and friendship between Việt Nam and Laos to be forever green and eternally sustainable, contributing to the protection of peace, friendship, and cooperation in the region and the world.

The delegates respectfully observe a minute of silence, remembering the merits and sacrifices of the martyrs.

Điện Biên province continues to effectively implement policies for those who have contributed to the revolution; care for the lives of wounded soldiers and relatives of martyrs; and promote the movements of “Repaying gratitude” and “When drinking water, remember its source”. They strive to build Điện Biên into a green, smart, sustainable, and relatively well-developed province in the region. Furthermore, they will maintain national defense and security, firmly protect national border sovereignty, and be worthy of the heroic Điện Biên Phủ tradition.

After the visitation, delegates, officials, soldiers, and people of ethnic groups in Điện Biên province performed the burial ritual for the martyrs’ remains.
