Điện Biên hosts national stick-pushing tourney

ĐBP - On March 8, the 19th National Stick-pushing Championship kicked off at the Điện Biên provincial multi-purpose gymnasium, co-organized by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Sports Authority of Việt Nam under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

This year’s tournament draws over 250 athletes from 21 teams, representing provinces and cities nationwide. Competitors will vie for top honors in 26 weight categories for both men and women.

As a culturally rich and traditional sporting event, the championship aims to promote the practice of traditional sports and reinforce the “Great Unity” movement, following President Hồ Chí Minh’s example.

Comrade Giàng Thị Hoa, Member of the Điện Biên provincial Party Committee’s Standing Board and Vice Chairwoman of the Điện Biên provincial People’s Council, presents commemorative flags to participating delegations.

The tournament also seeks to evaluate the expertise of young stick-pushing athletes nationwide, identify and recruit talented individuals, and bolster the national youth team.

The participating delegations receive souvenirs and flowers from the organizing panel.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Nguyễn Minh Phú, Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, emphasized that Điện Biên province had meticulously prepared for the event, ensuring top-notch facilities, equipment, and logistics. The championship promises to deliver thrilling matches with high-level expertise, contributing to the promotion of sports and physical training, particularly traditional stick-pushing sports, at the local level.

The event, as part of the activities celebrating the 2025 Ban Flower Festival and Việt Nam Sports Day on March 27, will run from March 8 to 15, 2025.
